Gayle, Track Teams Earn USTFCCCA Academic Honors

WASHINGTON, DC --- Over the weekend, the Howard Track & Field programs were recognized for their academic efforts by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Individually, Rajae Gayle has been named to the 2015 USTFCCCA Divison I All-Academic team. It marked the second straight year that the junior javelin thrower and Biology major has received the prestigious honor. A native of Jamaica, Gayle recently captured the MEAC title in the javelin and was named to the All-MEAC First Team for the second straight season.

"Rajae embodies the spirit of the true Howard University student athlete: A great person, a great leader, a great champion and a great student," praised head coach Marc Harrison.

The men's & women's teams were both cited for USTFCCCA team awards as they each posted over a 3.0 GPA. The Bison women netted a 3.35 GPA while the men sported a 3.03 GPA. It is yet another one of the academic awards the Department of Athletics has received during the past academic year as Howard recently topped all MEAC institutions with the most students named to the Commissioner's All Academic team for 2015.

"Our teams work very hard on and off the track," said Harrison, in his third year at the helm of the Howard program. "It's academics first, with track and field a very close second. We strive to compete in all that we do, including our grades. I appreciate the efforts of our student athletes, my staff and the academic support from Ms. Zaneta Ivy (athletics academic coordinator) and her staff.  It's a team effort."
