Softball to Open MEAC Tournament Against Savannah State

ORMOND BEACH, FL --- For the first time since 2011, the Howard softball team will be continuing its season with a trip to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament.

The Lady Bison earned the 4-seed in the Northern Division after posting an 8-10 conference record (14-27 overall), its best conference winning percentage (.444) since 2012, when the team recorded an indentical mark but finished one position out of contention for the Tournament. The 2011 squad went 8-9 (.471) in conference, also earned the North's 4-seed, and ended their tourney run one game away from the Championship game before losing to eventual champion Bethune-Cookman.

The overall goal for Howard is clear: win its second MEAC Championship, adding to the Lady Bison's title in 2007.

HU will face a tough task opening against the Savannah State Tigers. SSU earned its second-ever Southern Division title this year with a program-best 13-1 MEAC record (20-15 overall). Savannah State is led by junior first baseman Torrian Wright, the two-time MEAC Player of the Year who leads the conference in seven different categories and is currently ranked nationally in a pair (home runs and RBI). 

The Lady Bison will Wright's influence with the all-around skill of redshirt junior outfielder Al'Asia Davis. The newly minted First Team All-MEAC selection 
has been the Lady Bison's most consistent force all season, ranking in the top five in the MEAC in RBI (45; first), doubles (17; first), batting average (.443, second), hits (54; second), on-base percentage (.547; second) and walks (20; 4th).

Howard opened the season against SSU, falling in an interdivisional doubleheader, 12-4 and 8-7.
