Box Score DOVER, DE --- Senior
Jaymie Cox scored a season-high seven goals and the Howard women's lacrosse team
(0-8) nearly rallied from a ten goal deficit before falling to Delaware State, 17-15, on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.
The highlight of Howard's final road and non-conference game of the season was Cox surpassing
her season best goal tally of six one game after setting it. Cox's goal total was the game's high mark and one goal shy of the team's season high of eight by freshman
Aria Williams, who scored four times against Delaware State (2-13). Cox and Williams also added an assist apiece.
Four other players scored for Howard - senior
Michaela Jupiter, redshirt junior
Taylor Gainey, sophomore
Mariah Brown and freshman
Natia Warren.
For the Lady Bison, the game was truly a tale of two halves.
After a Williams goal at the 25:50 mark tied the game at 1-1, Delaware State used 4-1, 5-1 and 3-0 scoring bursts to open up a 13-3 advantage by halftime.
The second period opened the same way - with alternating goals from each team - but it would be Howard's turn to up its scoring. A 6-1 run paced by four Cox goals cut DSU's lead in half (15-10) with under 14 minutes left in the game.
Another 4-1 run over the next nine-plus minutes pulled Howard to within two goals (16-14) with 4:16 to go.
However, after nearly three minutes of action, the Lady Hornets all but sealed the game on a score with 1:19 left in the game. Cox would set her new season high on a goal with 38 seconds left to set the final score.
OTHER NOTES: Howard scored 15 goals - its best output of the season - for the third consecutive game...despite the loss, Howard still holds a 2-1 lead in the all-time series with Delaware State.
NEXT UP: Howard will honor its four seniors - Cox, Jupiter,
Candace Ross and Dariel Wimbley - when Howard hosts Atlantic Sun (A-Sun) member Furman on Saturday, April 18 at noon at Greene Stadium.
