Bison Take on Stony Brook

Stony Brook, NY---The Howard University football team steps out of conference play to take on the Seawolves of Stony Brook at 1 pm on Saturday at Kenneth P. LaVelle Stadium.  The game will be broadcast on www.whbc963hd3.com.  Trevin Jones will do the play by play and Michael Lindo the color commentary.

It will be first time that the two have met and is an intriguing matchup.  The Seawolves (2-5) appeared to be in good shape when they opened the season with back-to-back wins, averaging almost 35 points.  But since then, Stony Brook has dropped five in a row, including a close, 21-7 home loss to Elon last week.  It must be noted that the Seawolves play in the CAA, one of the top FCS leagues in the country.

"Their record is deceiving," said Howard head coach Gary "Flea" Harrell.  "They are very sound in what they do.  I am sure that they will be excited about playing us at their place and stopping their losing streak."

The Bison (1-7) are coming off their first win of the season, a 55-9 decision over Savannah State at home last Saturday.  In that game, red-shirt freshman quarterback Kalen Johnson had his best game, throwing for 4 TDs and running for another.

"The game is slowing down for Kalen," noted Harrell.  "He made some good throws and some good decisions.  He is progressing nicely.  This is another chance for him in his growth progression against a good defense."

The Howard defense played a big part in the victory, forcing four turnovers and turning two of them into touchdowns.  The secondary, especially cornerbacks Kenneth Russ and Travon Hunt and safety Craig Johnson, have been making big plays all season, each having at least one TD.

Another key factor has been the consistency of senior punter/placekicker John Fleck.  The 6-2 senior from Indianapolis, IN, is averaging almost 42 yards per punt and has been especially effective in reversing field position with 17 punts of over 50 yards.  He also leads the team in scoring and is a perfect 10 for 10 on PATs.

NEXT UP:  The Bison return home for Senior Day next week as they host North Carolina Central at 1 pm in Greene Stadium.  Fifteen senior members of the team will be playing their last home game in a Howard uniform.  There will be a special tribute for Terrence Tusan, who died last year.  The Seawolves travel to Kingston, RI to take on Rhode Island at 12:30 pm.
