PISCATAWAY, N.J. (September 25, 2026) --Rutgers scored on five-of-its-ix first possessions and went on to hand the Howard University football team a 58-7 loss in nonconference action at SHI Stadium before 34,466.
 
It was the third straight loss for the Bison (1-3) while the Scarlet Knights earned their first win of the season (1-3).
 
After taking an early 7-0 advantage, Rutgers quarterback Dylan Lonergan connected with KJ Duff for a 77-yard TD to extend the margin, 14-0, off an INT.
 
Following a short Howard punt on the next possession, Rutgers used six plays to increase the lead, 21-0, with 4:28 left in the first period.
 
The Bison finally got on the board when graduate running back Eden James (Indianapolis) took the handoff and romped 75 yards to the end zone, cutting the deficit, 21-7, with 4:15 remaining in the first quarter. It was the longest run of James' career.
 
The Scarlet Knights quickly answered by driving 75 yards in 11 plays, capping off with a one-yard score, 28-7, with a little less than a minute left in the first quarter.
 
From there, the Scarlet Knights dominated the game using a balanced attack to control the clock.
 
Rutgers amassed 534 total yards of offense (266 rushing & 268 passing) for the game.
 
The Bison offense was throttled by the Rutgers defense, finishing with 184 yards of total offense. James accounted for 116 on seven carries.
 
Junior defensive back Michael Grandy (Savannah, Ga.) and sophomore linebacker Glen Vinson III (Upper Marlboro, Md.) each recorded eight total tackles in a losing effort.
 
NEXT UP: Howard looks to end its current skid when it takes on Hampton University in the Battle of the Real HU Saturday (Oct. 3) at Audi Field. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
