Bison face defending national champion

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (September 11, 2026) – Howard University football team takes on No. 5 Indiana University (IU), the defending national champion, Saturday (Sept. 12). Kickoff is set for noon, live on the Big Ten Network.

Howard (1-1) dropped a 28-21 decision to No. 23 Richmond in a nonconference game Saturday (Sept. 5) in Greene Stadium. The Bison rallied from a 20-0 halftime deficit but fell just short.
 
The Hoosiers (1-0) defeated North Texas State, 52-16, in their season opener Saturday (Sept. 5) in Bloomington. It was IU's 28th straight victory, dating back to 2024. The Hoosiers took a 14-0 advantage and closed out the convincing win with a 21-point fourth quarter explosion.
 
THE SERIES
 
This is the first meeting between the institutions. This is also IU's first-ever matchup with an HBCU.
 
THE COACHES
 
Howard is coached by Ted White (Howard, '98), who is in his first season.
 
Indiana is coached by Curt Cignetti (West Virginia '82), who is in his third season at the helm.

HOWARD
 
Offensively, the Bison are led by graduate quarterback Ja'Shawn Scroggins (28-of-88 for 424 yards & 4 TDs); 15 carries for 49 yards), junior running backs Travis Kerney (26 carries for 81 yards) and Billy Roberson II (14 carries for 65 & a TD), senior tight end Nathanial Clark (8 receptions for 53 yards & a TD), senior wide receiver Se'Quan Osborne (4 catches for 101 yards & a TD) and junior wide receiver Antonio Hunter (4 receptions for 81 yards & a TD).
 
The Buffalo Soldier defense is led sophomore linebacker Aidan Foster (14 total tackles, a TFL, a sack, a FF, 2 QB hurries & a FR), graduate defensive back Kaleb Gallop (14 total tackles and a 0.5 TFL) and graduate linebackers Rodney Roane Jr. (14 total tackles, 2 TFLs, a sack, a FF, a FR and an INT) and Gabe Stephens (7 total tackles & a TFL).
 
INDIANA
 
Offensively, the Hoosiers are led by graduate quarterback Josh Hoover (13-of-16 for 231 yards & 4 TDs), redshirt senior running back Turbo Richard (15 carries for 58 yards & 2 TDs), third-year running back Charlie Beck (4 for 64 yards & 2 TDs) and graduate wide receiver Tyler Morris (3 receptions for 35 yards).
 
Defensively, Indiana is led by graduate linebacker Isaiah Jones (12 total tackles), second-year defensive back Byron Baldwin, Jr (5 total tackles), redshirt defensive lineman Tobi Osunsanmi (4 total tackles & 2 sacks) and third-year linebacker Rolijah Hardy (7 total tackles).
 
The Hoosiers are dangerous on special teams by punt return specialist, Turbo and redshirt senior kick return specialist Lee Beebe, Jr. (72 yards on two returns).
 
GAME NOTES
 
BISON HOOVES
 
There are a number of new faces on the Howard squad, many of whom registered career-highs in the win over Alabama A&M (Aug. 29).
 
Matt Conord (Lithia, Fla.) has yet to miss a field goal or a PAT through two games.
 
HOOSIER NOTES
 
Becker, Hardy and defensive lineman Tyrique Tucker were all named to the All-BIG 10 Preseason Team.
 
NEXT UP
 
The Bison receive an early season bye before they travel to New Jersey to take Rutgers, another Big Ten opponents (Sept. 25). Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
