Women's Volleyball Loses Pair at Liberty Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LYNCHBURG, VA --- The Howard women's volleyball team (2-5) lost its final two games in the Liberty Invitational this weekend, dropping a four-set match to UNC Greensboro and falling to Murray State in straight sets.

HOWARD 1, UNCG 3
Freshman outside hitter Khaila Donaldson recorded her third double-double of the season, putting down a team-best 13 kills and picking up a game-high 18 digs. Senior setter Stephanie Shultis assisted on 25 points and senior middle blocker Assata Conway had a hand in five blocks.

Howard held an early 3-2 lead inthe first set but a string of errors put the Lady Bison in a 8-4 hole they could never rally from in losing the first set, 25-22. HU would even the game in the second set, leading by as many as five points (17-12) and holding that lead for a 25-20 set victory.

Set three saw Howard open with a 3-0 advantage and lead 7-6. However, UNCG used a 10-1 run to take their biggest lead of the game (16-8) and held off the Lady Bison for to take the set, 25-17. The final set was much more competitive, as seven ties and four lead changes early on led to a 10-10 deadlock. UNCG again would pull away from Howard, this time using a 8-2 surge to go up 18-12 before take the game 25-20.

HOWARD 0, MURRAY STATE 3
Donaldson recorded another double digit hitting performance, scoring 10 kills against the eventual Invitational champions. Senior outside hitter Meagan Lagerlef also hit well with eight kills of her own. Conway had the best hitting percentage in the match, going .462 (6-0-13). Senior libero Allyson Lods tied for the game lead with 13 digs and Shultis logged 20 assists.

Howard played each set close for a time but continued to be doomed by long runs by their opponent. In set one, the Lady Bison only trailed by one (7-6) in the beginning stages but were outscored 13-7 through the bulk of the match as Murray State took its largest lead of the set (20-13) and eventually took the point, 25-18.

In set two, Howard held a 13-9 advantage after a service ace by Shultis but the Lady Bison surrended a 9-1 run to fall behind, 18-14 before losing the set, 25-21.

The Lady Bison remained competitive late into the third set, using a 5-1 run of their own in the middle of the set to take a 14-13 lead. Murray State would immediately respond with an 8-0 run to move ahead 21-13 en route to a 25-17 match-clinching win.

Donaldson was selected to the Liberty Invitational All-Tournament team after her three-game performance: 35 kills (3.5/set), a .207 hitting percentage, 34 digs (3.4/set) and 12 total blocks.

Howard will try to snap their skid on Tuesday, September 9 as the Lady Bison travel to Loyola (MD) for a 7 p.m. matchup.
