WBB Wins Third Straight With Victory Over Morgan

Box Score

BALTIMORE, MD --- Redshirt freshman guard Te'Shya Heslip and freshman forward Sydni Johnson scored 15 points apiece to lead the Howard women's basketball team to a 71-66 victory over the Morgan State Lady Bears on Saturday afternoon at Hill Field House.

The victory is the third in a row for Howard (6-8) and keeps the Lady Bison in second place and undefeated in early Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play with a 2-0 record. Morgan State falls to 2-10 (0-1 MEAC) on the season.

Heslip dished out a career-best 10 assists for her first double-double of the season and was three rebounds short of a triple double. She also had four steals, her sixth straight game with at least one steal.

Johnson - the current MEAC Rookie of the Week - set a new career high with her 15 points and also pulled down six rebounds, had two assists and made two steals.

Redshirt senior Cabria Johnson also had a strong game, scoring 11 points on 50 percent (4-of-8) shooting and adding four rebounds, two steals and a block.

After allowing a jumper on the opening possession by Morgan State's Tracey Carrington - who exploded for 33 points - Howard would never trail again in the contest. The Lady Bison took their biggest lead of the first half, 23-16, with 4:59 to go before going into halftime with a 30-25 edge.

Both teams played the second half to a 41-41 tie, but Morgan would get no closer than four points.

HU will take a quick break from MEAC play to host the Cornell Big Red in its last non-conference opponent of the season on Wednesday, January 8. Tipoff for the game at Burr Gymnasium is scheduled for 7:00 pm and admission is free.

OTHER NOTES
The lone setback that the Lady Bison encountered during the game was the loss of graduate student forward Shavonne Duckett, who went down early in the first half with an apparent ankle injury.
