Lady Bison Take Down Wofford In Terrapin Classic

Box Score
COLLEGE PARK, MD --- Howard women's basketball ended their season-high nine-game road stretch on a high note as the Lady Bison grabbed a wire-to-wire win over the Terriers of Wofford College 63-55 in the consolation game of the University of Maryland Terrapin Classic on Sunday morning.

Howard (4-8) turned things around in the tail end of the road schedule by splitting its last four games after dropping their first five.

"All of our non-conference games were played to prepare for a grueling MEAC schedule," said Howard head coach Tennille Adams. "Every team that we have played thus far mirrors a team in the MEAC and given how we've played, we have some reason to be excited."

Sophomore center Victoria Gonzalez chipped in nine points and five rebounds and was named to the Terrapin Classic All-Tournament Team after averaging 16.5 PPG on 43.8 percent shooting, 6.5 RPG, 2.5 SPG, 1.0 APG and 1.0 BPG in the two games.

HU was led against Wofford (2-10) by redshirt freshman guard Te'Shya Heslip, who scored 15 of her game-high 16 points in the second half. Heslip also set a career high with eight assists, over half of the team's season-high-tying 15 helpers in the game.

Junior forward Cheyenne Brown shot 50 percent (6-of-12) from the floor to add 12 points, her first double-digit scoring effort since the Lady Bison's last win against New Hampshire on December 4.

Overall, Howard posted its first game with a positive assist-to-turnover ratio (15 A/13 TO; 1.15), a great sign of offensive balance.

"I thought we played extremely hard and extremely tough," Adams added. "It's good when you can get an offensive contribution from several players and see that the entire team is gaining confidence as we head into conference play."

Howard took its biggest lead of the first half by opening the game on an 11-2 run, powered by six of Brown's 12 points. The Terriers would make things competitive throughout and even closed to within one (22-21) with about four minutes left in the first. Unfazed, HU used a quick 6-1 to end the period and extend its lead to six (28-22) heading into halftime.

Wofford made it a two-point game (31-29) two and a half minutes into the second, but the Lady Bison would respond with a strong statement – a 15-4 run to move the advantage to the largest of the contest (46-33) with 11 minutes to go. HU would keep Wofford at least six points away for the rest of the game.

Outside of a home non-conference matchup with Cornell on January 8, Howard will finish the season against MEAC competition, beginning with their home conference opener against Delaware State on Thursday, January 2.
