Box Score WASHINGTON, DC --- Four Lady Bison scored in double figures as the Howard University women's basketball team defeated the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders 80-73Â on Sunday afternoon in Burr Gymnasium.
HU improves to 2-1 on the season with the victory while NJIT falls to 0-4.
Howard was led by the veteran frontcourt duo of sophomore
Victoria Gonzalez and redshirt senior
Cabria Johnson.
After not attempting a shot in the opening 20 minutes, Gonzalez exploded for a game-high 17 second-half points, while Johnson logged HU's first double double of the season after scoring 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Redshirt freshman guard
Te'Shya Heslip recorded her third straight double digit scoring output with 16 points and freshman guard
Aaliyah Wilson added 12 for the Lady Bison.
The game was a display of contrasting styles, pitting Howard's desire to push the ball up the court with NJIT's methodical half court system. Early on, the Highlanders' ability to execute their sets kept them in lockstep with the Lady Bison and even gave them a 6-5 lead with 13:35 to go in the first half.
At that point, Johnson started HU's push for separation. Of Johnson's 15 points, she would score 13 of them over the final 13 minutes of the half as Howard outscored NJIT, 36-25.
As the second half opened, a pair of free throws from junior forward
Cheyenne Brown and Gonzalez's first basket gave Howard its largest lead of the contest, 45-31, with 18:03 remaining.
NJIT would respond by getting to the line as the Highlanders scored hit seven free throws in a 12-4 run to cut HU's lead to 47-43 with 12:25 to go in the game.
Gonzalez would pick up where Johnson left off scoring putting in 11 points during a 9:31 stretch where Howard outscored NJIT 24-15 and held a 71-58 advantage with about two and a half minutes in the game. A 15-7 Highlander spurt would get NJIT to within five, 78-73, with 20 seconds remaining.
Gonzalez would close the door on any late-game magic with her final basket with 13 seconds left.
Howard will play the first of two road games this week on Wednesday, November 18 when the team travels to Loyola University (MD).
