BALTIMORE, MD --- On the day before the 2013 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Tournament, the Howard University volleyball team was honored for its impressive 20-10 campaign - a 19-win improvement from the previous season.
Earlier in the day, six Lady Bison were named to the 2013 MEAC Volleyball All-Academic Team. Each of the honorees - juniors
Meagan Lagerlef, Skyler Arbuckle, Assata Conway, Destinee Harrison & Stephanie Shultis along with sophomore
Jaleeza Stoudermire - maintained a 3.0 cumulative grade point average or better during the 2012-13 academic year. Howard's six selections were tied for the third-most among the conference's 13 member institutions.
At the MEAC Volleyball Tournament Banquet, four Howard players combined to claim five accolades. Freshman
Katherine Broussard was named MEAC Rookie of the Year and to the MEAC First Team after a season where she earned Rookie of the Week honors five times. Broussard recorded 366 kills, 307 digs (2.74 digs/set), 42 assists, 33 blocks and 32 services aces during her freshman season, ranking among the top ten in the conference in kills (3.27/set) and points (3.71/set).
Joining Broussard on the First Team were Conway & Shultis while junior
Allyson Lods rounded out the Lady Bison's honorees by claiming a spot on the Second Team.
Howard will look to add team hardware to its stellar individual showing when it competes in the conference tourney, which begins tomorrow (November 15) on the campus of Coppin State University. HU, the North Division 3-seed, will open tournament play with a 10:00 am match against South Division 2-seed North Carolina A&T, with the winner facing either North 1-seed Hampton or South 4-seed South Carolina State at 12:00 pm on Saturday, November 16. The championship game will be played on Sunday, November 17 at 12:00 pm and will be streamed on www.MEACSports.com.
