Bison dominate relays in midweek matchup

WASHINGTON — Howard University women's swimming & diving posted multiple top finishes across relay and individual events in a competitive 149-132 loss to Towson in Burr Natatorium Wednesday afternoon.

Howard opened the meet with a strong showing in the 200-yard medley relay, as the Bison quartet of Chanice Posada (Houston, Texas), Rhanishka Gibbs (Nassau, Bahamas), Alyssa Napier (Wilmington, Del.) and Zuilda Nwaeze (Columbia, Md.) touched in 1:44.78, setting a strong tone for the day.

In individual events, Nwaeze led the way in the 200-yard freestyle, earning her first individual top finish of the day with a time of 1:54.87. Posada continued the Bison momentum in the following event, winning the 50-yard backstroke in 26.16 seconds, while teammate Myeisha Sharrieff (Bermuda) followed closely to claim the runner-up spot.

Samyra Benoit (Santa Clarita, Calif.) added another highlight for Howard with a first-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (58.13). Standout freshman Napier took second in the event with a time of 58.33.

Nwaeze earned her second top finish of the day, taking first in the 100-yard freestyle (51.68).

Rookies Brooke Whitt (Chicago, Ill.) and Gibbs put on one of the more exciting performances of the afternoon, finishing first and second in the 100-yard breaststroke with times of 1:07.75 and 1:08.03, respectively.

In a down-to-the-wire race, the Tigers' and Bison's best went stroke-for-stroke in the 50-yard butterfly, with Howard's Posada taking second in 25.97, just 0.13 seconds shy of first place.

Howard closed the meet with momentum in the 200-yard freestyle relay, as the team of Gabrielle Vickles (El Dorado, Trinidad & Tobago), Jasmine Morgan (Chicago, Ill.), Napier and Nwaeze posted a time of 1:35.82, winning the final event of the day.

The Bison return to action Friday, January 16, at 2 P.M. when they travel to Lexington, Va., to face the VMI Keydets.
