HAMPTON
Hampton (1-2) dropped its conference opener, 33-30, to North Carolina A&T State (NCAT) in double overtime Saturday (Sept. 13). The Pirates led by 10 late in the fourth quarter before allowing NCAT to stage a comeback and send the game into extra frames.
Hampton was led by its double-threat senior quarterback Isaiah Freeman, who accounted for 282 yards and three TDs in the loss.
The Pirates opened the season with a 28-14 loss to No. 17 Jackson State (Aug. 30) and then rebounded with a 27-20 come-from-behind win over Johnson C. Smith (Sept. 6) before the loss at NCAT.
HOWARD
Howard (2-1) is coming off a 38-10 win over Morehouse College Saturday (Sept. 13) in the annual HBCU NYC Football Classic.
Howard got an outstanding performance from graduate quarterback
Tyriq Starks (Carol City, Fla.), who accounted for 270 yards of total offense and three TDs. Starks' efforts were complemented by the defense play, which held Morehouse to 182 yards of total offense, including 54 yards on the ground.
The Bison opened the season with a 10-9 win over Florida A&M (Aug. 30) in the Orange Blossom Classic and a 55-7 loss at Temple (Sept. 6) before last Saturday's win over Morehouse.
THE COACHES
Hampton is coached by Trent Boykin (Youngstown State, '95), who is in his first full season as head coach after serving as interim a year ago. Howard is coached by
Larry Scott (USF, '00), who is in his fifth full season.

THE SERIES
The two schools are meeting for the 100
th time with Hampton holding a 55-43-1 advantage, dating back in 1908. The previous 99 meetings are by far the most in Howard illustrious history.
Hampton has won eight straight, dating back to 2015, including last year's matchup, 27-20, in the Classic. The past three games have been decided by a total of 11 points.
KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH
HAMPTON
The high-octane offense is led by Freeman (31-of-57 for 321 yards & 3 TDs; 38 carries for 242 yards & a TD), graduate running back Ja'Quan Snipes (38 carries for 234 yards & 3 TDs) and freshman Jah'Kai Chavis (22 carries for 133 yards & a TD).
Freeman has been able to spread the ball to the quartet of redshirt sophomore Mar'Shawn Ferguson Jr. (7 receptions for 77 yards & a TD), redshirt junior Donovan Shepard (7 receptions for 65 yards), junior Maxwell Moss (7 catches for 62 yards) and redshirt senior Tae'Shaun Johnson (7 receptions for 50 yards & a TD).
The defensive charge is led by graduate linebacker Harold O'Neal (23 tackles, including 3.5 TFLs), junior defensive back MJ Moultrie III (18 tackles, including a TFL), sophomore linebacker Michael M Matthews Canty (17 tackles & a sack), redshirt junior Korede Sogbesan (13 tackles & a sack) and senior defensive back Cam Sturdifen (16 tackles & a FF).
The Pirates are solid with their sophomore placekicker/punter Brett Starling (5-of-5 on FGs, including a 42-yard long; almost 42 yards per punt).
HOWARD
On offense, the Bison will rely on the talents of Starks (23-of-41 for 267 yards & 4 TDs; 79 yards rushing & a TD).
The run game is powered by the duo of sophomore running backs
Travis Kerney (31 carries for 98 yards) and
Anthony Reagan Jr. (11 carries for 53 yards & 2 TDs).
The passing game will be bolstered by junior wide receiver
Zaden Jackson (6 receptions for 81 yards & a TD), graduate wide receiver
Andre Cooper II (4 receptions for 80 yards), freshman wide receiver
Antonio Hunter (5 catches for 46 yards) and sophomore tight end
KD Mosley (5 receptions for 39 yards & a TD).
The offensive line is anchored by senior all-conference center
Tim Artis Jr. (Charlotte, N.C.).
The Buffalo Soldier defense is led by senior All-MEAC defensive lineman

Howard has played in four different professional stadiums: Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla. (Aug. 30); Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia (Sept. 6); MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. (Sept. 13) and Audi Field (Sept. 20)…the two institutions will meet again this season in a men's and women's basketball doubleheader…The women's soccer teams met earlier this year at the annual HBCU Invitational in Audi Field where the Bison defeated Hampton, 4-1…The Howard defense has nine players who have recorded between five and nine tackles...
