WASHINGTON (February 20, 2025) – Howard University softball team travels to Palm Springs, Calif., for the Mary Nutter Classic where they will play five games during the three-day tournament (Feb. 21-23).
The Lady Bison open the tournament against No.12/14 Duke Friday (Feb. 21) at 6:30 p.m. (ET), followed by San Jose State later that night at 11:30 p.m. (ET). Next day (Feb. 22), they face No. 18/17 Nebraska at 11 p.m. (ET) before wrapping up the tourney Sunday (Feb. 23) against Long Beach State (2:30 p.m. ET) and Loyola-Marymount (4:30 p.m. ET).
WEEKEND PREVIEW
HOWARD
Last weekend, the Lady Bison finished .500 (2-2) at the HBCU Collegiate Invitational in Atlanta.
Sophomore
Angel Riggins (San Diego) led the bison offense, batting a perfect 3-of-3 in one game against Florida A&M (Feb. 14).
DUKE
The Blue Devils competed in the Bubly Invitational (Feb. 14-16), securing victories against Boston College (9-1), Providence (10-2), Binghamton (4-0) and Florida (8-1) but faced a loss to Florida (0-9). Duke (7-3) is currently riding a four-game win streak.
SAN JOSE STATE
The Spartans (5-5) played in the Silicon Valley Classic Tournament where they won every game against Illinois Chicago (9-2), UC San Diego (7-0 & 8-1) and Cal Poly (6-0 & 6-4).
NEBRASKA
The Cornhuskers (8-2) competed in the Troy Cox Classic (Feb. 14-16), winning all five matchups against Texas A&M (20-1), New Mexico State (10-0), Montana (13-5 & 16-3) and Northern Colorado (10-0).
LONG BEACH STATE
The Beach (4-4) hosted the Wilson Tournament, but due to inclement weather, all Thursday games were canceled. They recorded a win against St. Mary's (4-0) but faced losses to Iowa state (4-2) and Kansas (3-2).
LOYOLA MARYMOUNT
The Lions (3-7) competed in the Fresno State Tournament, grabbing victories against Utah (12-3) and UC Santa Barbara (5-1) but losses to Utah (9-0), Fresno State (6-1) and UC Santa Barbara (4-3).
LAST TIMEOUT
In the HBCU Collegiate Invitational, Howard lost their opening game, 9-1, against Florida A&M. The Lady Bison won their next contest against Grambling State (8-5), then faced a loss against Southern, 13-5 (f/6). The Lady Bison closed the weekend with a win against Alcorn State (10-8).
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
Thursday (Feb. 27)-Saturday (March 1), HU heads to Manoa, Hawaii, to compete in the Outrigger Invitational.
