Women’s Hoops Goes to UVA Wednesday

Bison meet Cavs in a nonconference battle

WASHINGTON (December 9, 2025) – Howard University women's basketball team goes to Charlottesville, Va., Wednesday (Dec. 10), battling Virginia (UVA) in a nonconference clash. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

On Dec. 7, senior forward Zennia Thomas (Cleveland) scored a team-high 21 points and redshirt junior guard Zoe Stewart (Terre Haute, Ind.) added 15 points but it was not enough to overcome a fourth quarter scoring drought as the Bison fell, 63-59, at Old Dominion in a nonconference contest in Norfolk, Va.

The Cavaliers are coming off an impressive 81-55 win over Boston College Sunday (Dec. 7). The Cavaliers were led by Paris Clark (13 points), Kymora Johnson (13 points), Sa'Myah Smith (12 points), Gabby White (12 points) and Romi Levy (11 points) as five UVA players finished in double figures.

THE COACHES
 
Howard is coached by Ty Grace (New Haven, '99), who is in her 11th season and the second winningest coach in school history. UVA is led by Amaka Agugua-Hamilton (Hofstra, '05), who is in her third season.
 
SERIES RECORD
 
This is the third meeting between the two institutions. The Cavaliers edged the Bison, 59-56, in 2012 and won again, 74-53, in Charlottesville (2024).

HOWARD
 
Howard is holding opponents to 25-percent shooting from three and allowing only 62 points per game…Some of Howard's success in close victories has been its free throw shooting, converting 75-percent from the charity stripe this season and 31st in the nation…The vaunted Howard defense continues to be its staple, recording 20 points off opponents' turnovers while also averaging 10.1 steals and 4.3 blocks…The Bison are ranked 98th in the latest NCAA Net Rankings…Thomas, senior forward Nile Miller (Woodbury, N.J.) and freshman guard Ariella Henigan (Chicago) were named MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) honorable mention for their performances last week…Nationally, Miller is tied for seventh in steals and 34th in steals per game…Thomas is tied for 10th in free throws and tied for 11th in free throws attempts…Howard is the preseason pick to win the MEAC and Miller and Thomas are preseason First Team All-MEAC selections…Stewart's 23 points versus Fairfield (Dec. 9) was a career high, her previous high was 19 points when she was at Missouri State…Stewart has reached double figures for the past five games…Thomas has reached double figures in all but one game this season.
 
UVA
 
The Cavaliers are averaging 79 points per game and shooting 47-percent from the floor, including 35percent from three…UVA is outrebounding opponents by almost 16.0 per game and averaging 18.0 assists, 9.5 steals and 7.8 blocks…Nationally, the Cavaliers rank third in blocked shots, seventh in rebounding margin, 22nd in assists/turnover ratio and 26th in assists per game.  UVA is a veteran team with its starting lineup including three graduates, one senior and one junior.
 
NEXT UP
 
Howard will take on its third straight opponent from the state of Virginia, but this time, it will be at the CareFirst Arena in Southeast D.C.  It will The Battle of the Real HU against Hampton.  The tipoff is scheduled for noon.
 
UVA hosts Winthrop Saturday (Dec. 13) at noon.
