Napier, Sharrieff, and Benoit highlight night with top finishes for the Bison

WASHINGTON — Howard women's swimming & diving team earned multiple event victories in a competitive dual meet against American University on Halloween Night in Burr Natatorium.

Freshman Alyssa Napier (Wilmington, Del.) made her season debut in the 200-yard freestyle and didn't disappoint, capturing first place with a time of 1:54.49, nearly two seconds ahead of the pool. Mia Patton (Nassau, Bahamas) followed in third (1:57.07) and Iala Cropper (Rochester, N.Y.) in fifth to secure key points for the Bison.

Samyra Benoit (Santa Clarita, Calif.) continued her consistent campaign with a runner-up finish in the 100 fly (57.33), dropping more than a second from her previous best of 58.66. In the 100 back, Myeisha Sharrieff (Bermuda) claimed second place (57.51), cutting more than a second off her season mark of 58.89. Summer McKoy (Pikesville, Md.) added a third-place finish (59.54) as Howard placed two in the top three.

Sophomore diver Jordan Harrell (Richmond, Va.) turned in a strong performance on the 1-meter board, finishing third overall with a score of 119.17 to lead the Bison divers.

In the relays, the quartet of Sharrieff, Brooke Whitt (Chicago, Ill.), Benoit, and Gabrielle Vickles (El Dorado, Trinidad & Tobago) took second in the 200 medley relay (1:46.52), narrowly missing the win by less than half a second. The team of Napier, Jasmine Morgan (Chicago, Ill.), McKoy, and Vickles closed out the night with a win in the 200 free relay (1:35.94).

Other top performers included Brooke Whitt, who earned second in the 100 breast (1:07.27), and Faith McCallister (Abingdon, Md.), who followed in fourth (1:10.52). Patton also notched a second-place finish in the 500 free (5:16.84), while Tiara Jackson (Los Angeles, Calif.) added a fifth-place showing.

The Bison return to competition on Friday, November 8, at 1 p.m. for a Tri-Meet hosted by UMBC in Baltimore.
