Men’s Basketball Takes On Morehouse in annual MLK Day Classic

Bison meet Maroon Tigers for MLK Holiday Weekend

WASHINGTON (January 19, 2025) – Howard University men's basketball team welcomes Morehouse College (MC) to Burr Gymnasium Monday (Jan. 20) for the annual MLK Day Classic. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m., live on ESPN+.

Wednesday (Jan. 15), Warren Mouganda nailed a three-pointer in the right corner with 2.2 seconds remaining to give Bowie State a thrilling 76-73 win over the Bison in a nonconference game at Burr Gymnasium.
 
MOREHOUSE
 
Morehouse (8-8, 6-3) is coming off a 70-66 road loss at Edward Waters Saturday (Jan. 18). The Maroon Tigers featured a balanced attack in the loss with Cedric Taylor III (14 points & seven boards), JerMontae Hill (13 points), Sincere Key (13 points), Ahman Decker (11 points) and Omar Rowe (10 points) off the bench. Despite the loss, Morehouse has won six-of-its-last-eight contests.
 
SERIES RECORD
 
This is the third meeting between the two storied institutions on the hardwood with HU winning the previous two matchups.
 
THE COACHES
 
Morehouse is coached by Doug Whittler, who is in his second season there at his alma mater. Howard is led by Kenneth Blakeney (Duke, '95) who is in his sixth season and has led the Bison to two straight MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) Tournament titles and NCAA appearances.

Individually, freshman guard Blake Harper (Washington) leads the conference in scoring and rebounding, third in minutes played, fifth in assists and assists/turnover ratio and fifth in field goal percentage (47-percent)…senior guard Marcus Dockery (Washington) again leads the MEAC in three pointers made (2.9 per game) and three-point shooting (45-percent), third in field goal shooting (48-percent), fourth in scoring (16.9 ppg) and second in minutes played…graduate guard Cameron Shockley-Okeke (Norwalk, Conn.) is third in three pointers made (2.2)…graduate guard Joshua Strong (Minneapolis) is sixth in three pointers made per game (2.0 per game)…graduate guard Anwar Gill (Washington) leads the conference in assists (3.7) and seventh in assists/turnover ratio…redshirt junior forward Ayodele Taiwo (Lagos, Nigeria) is 10th in blocked shots.

Harper has established himself as one of the top freshmen in the country, being named MEAC Rookie of the Week 10 times this season...in the past four games, he has equaled his career-high 34 points twice, connecting on 33-of-57 from the field, including 8-of-13 from three-point range and 33-of-39 from the charity stripe…Dockery is quietly having his best all-around season in a Bison uniform, continuing to be the premier long ball shooter in the conference for the third straight season…Dockery has flourished in other areas, including 46-percent from the field, 43-percent from three-point land and 86-percent from the charity stripe…Dockery has a career-high 44 assists and counting…Shockley-Okeke has come on strong for Howard during its recent surge in scoring, averaging over 20 points in the past four games, connecting on 28 -of-46, including 20-of-36 from three-point land while also grabbing 19 rebounds…Shockley-Okeke scored a care- 27 points versus Bowie State (Jan. 15)…Graduate guard Jaren Johnson (Lynwood, Calif.) has also stepped up in the past four games, scoring 34 points, dealing out 17 assists and converting on 17-of 20 from the free throw line…Johnson had his best showing versus Delaware State (Jan. 4) with a season-high 12 points and six assists…The Bison are averaging almost 18 assists per game and limiting opponents to 31-percent shooting from the three-point line…A nemesis for the Bison has been the turnover where they are surrendering 18 points a contest off their miscues…The shorthanded Bison continue to play without the services of Strong, Bryce Harris (Brentwood, N.Y), the MEAC Preseason Player of the Year, starting forward Dom Campbell (Scarborough, Maine) and junior reserve forward Ose Okojie (Brampton, Canada), who combine for almost 30 points and 20 rebounds among them and their statuses are unknown.

The Maroon Tigers are averaging 74. 1 point per contest…Defensively, they are averaging almost eight steals and 3.3 blocks per game…Morehouse has been hurt by its free throw shooting where it is connecting on only 67-percent from the charity stripe.
