Bison looking to extend win streak versus Bulldogs

WASHINGTON (January 14, 2025) – Howard University men's basketball team battles Bowie State (BSU) Wednesday (Jan. 15) inside The Burr. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.

Monday (Jan. 13), the Bison extended their win streak to three after defeating Coppin State, 90-75, at Burr Gymnasium. Freshman guard Blake Harper (Washington) led the way with a double-double (25 points & 12 boards) while fellow D.C. native senior guard Marcus Dockery added 24 points on 6-of-8 shooting from downtown.
 
BOWIE STATE
 
Bowie State (8-8) is coming off a 65-57 loss to Shaw at home Thursday (Jan. 9). The Bulldogs were led by reserves Justin Morris (19 points & six rebounds) and Joseph Allen (10 points & six rebounds). For the game, Bowie State shot 37-percent (18-of-48).
 
SERIES RECORD
 
This is the first meeting between the two schools, who are separated by only five miles.
 
THE COACHES
 
Bowie State is coached by Darrell Brooks (Bowie State, '79), who is in his 15th season there at his alma mater. Howard is led by Kenneth Blakeney (Duke, '95) who is in his sixth season and has led the Bison to two straight MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) Tournament titles and NCAA appearances.

Individually, Harper leads the conference in scoring (19.1 ppg) and rebounding (6.9), second in free throw (84-percent), fifth in assists and assists/turnover ratio, sixth in field goal percentage (47-percent) and third in minutes…Dockery again leads the MEAC in three pointers made (2.9 per game) and three-point shooting (44-percent), third in shooting (48-percent), fourth in scoring (17.2 ppg) and second in minutes played…graduate guard Joshua Strong (Minneapolis) is sixth in three pointers made per game (2.0 per game)…graduate guard Anwar Gill (Washington) leads the conference in assist (4.2), fourth in minutes played and seventh in assists/turnover ratio…redshirt junior Ayodele Taiwo (Lagos, Nigeria) is eighth in blocked shots.

The Bulldogs have lost three-of-their-last-four contests...on the season, Bowie State has had problems on defense, allowing its opponents to average 74 points per game…the Bulldogs are shooting only 28-percent from beyond the arc and converting only 67-percent from the foul line.
 
HOWARD
 
Harper has established himself as one of the top freshmen in the country…Harper was named MEAC Player of the of the Week, marking the first time that a HU freshman has earned the honor since R.J. Cole (Jan. 2018)…Harper has been named the conference rookie of the week 10 times this season...Harper has scored 30 or more points in three-of-the-past eight games…in the past five games, Harper has converted on 45-of-51 free throw attempts for 89-percent…Harper has equaled his career high 34 points twice, connecting on 26-of-45 from the field, including 7-of-11 from three-point range and 25-of-28 from the charity stripe…Dockery is quietly having his best all-around season in a Bison uniform while continuing to be the premier long ball shooter in the conference for the third straight season…Dockery areas of his game that he has flourished is shooting 49-percent from the field and 46-percent from three-point land…Harper has improved his playmaking skills as he is scheduled to set a new career high in assists...graduate forward Cameron Shockley-Okeke (Norwalk, Conn.) has come on strong for Howard during its recent surge in scoring, averaging 18.0 points while shooting 14-of-23 from the field…Gill has also played a significant role in the team's success, needing only 77 points to reach the 1,000 career points and only 73 rebounds to have 500 rebounds in his productive collegiate career…graduate guard Jaren Johnson (Lynwood, Calif.) has also stepped up, tallying 37 points in the past three games while converting a perfect 18-of-18 from the charity stripe during a five-game stretch…the Bison are averaging almost 18 assists per game and limiting opponents to 31-percent shooting from the three-point line…a nemesis for the Bison has been the turnover where they are surrendering 18 points a contest off their miscues…The shorthanded Bison continue to play without the services of Strong, senior guard Bryce Harris (Brentwood, N.Y.), the MEAC Player of the Year and starting forward Dom Campbell (Scarborough, Maine) and their availabilities are unknown at this time…meanwhile in their absence, the Bison have gotten solid contributions from Taiwo, redshirt junior Miles Stewart (Orlando, Fla.), senior forward Mounir Hima (Tillaberi, Niger and most recently freshman forward Calvin Robins Jr. (Chicago), who came in and recorded a block, two rebounds and an assist in the win over Coppin State (Jan. 13).
