“Where Are They Now?” Featuring Dr. Debbie Lee

Former All-Conference selection turned doctor

WASHINGTON (July 18, 2024) - Motown native (Detroit) and Howard University softball star Dr. Debbie Lee completed her undergraduate studies at The Mecca in 2006, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology.

Dr. Lee made her name known across the NCAA as a two-time top-25 nationally ranked player in stolen bases, holding the program record for stolen bases in a season.

In her junior season, Dr. Lee made history as the first Howard University softball player named to the All-MEAC First Team and earned the title of Howard Softball Offensive Player of the Year. She added to her list of accolades during her senior season when she was named Howard Female Student-Athlete of the Year and co-captain of the softball team.

Dr. Lee transitioned from The Hilltop back home to the University of Michigan's School of Dentistry where she was presented the United States Air Force Health Professional Scholarship and was commissioned as an officer.

Dr. Lee completed a one-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. For three years, she served as a general dentist. Then, she completed her periodontics residency at the Air Force Postgraduate Dental School and received her Master of Science degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

She was awarded first place in the John F. Prichard Research Competition for her extensive research and study on oral cancer. Currently, her research is published in the Journal of Oral Pathology and Medicine. Once Dr. Lee concluded her residency, she achieved board certification and became a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology.

Dr. Lee spent four years abroad in Germany as Chief of Periodontics. She returned to the nation's capital, Washington, D.C., where she currently resides and serves as the sole periodontist at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling and as an adjunct clinical professor at the AEGD-1 residency at Andrews Air Force Base. Dr. Lee presently holds the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Air Force.

Dr. Lee is passionate about practicing all aspects of periodontics while serving her country and providing patients with high-level, cutting-edge and advanced care. Her mission is to improve patients' oral health.

Separate from her duties, Dr. Lee enjoys sports and travel while grasping the importance of family and quality time with her husband and three kids.
