WASHINGTON (March 22, 2024) - Howard Softball hosts three games against South Carolina State (SCSU) in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play. Due to inclement weather, the slate starts with a single game Saturday (March 23) at 6:30 p.m., followed by a noon twinbill Sunday (March 24). The action takes place at the Washington Nationals Youth Academy.

HOWARD
 
On the season, Howard holds a 18-7 (2-1 MEAC) mark.
 
They started off the season defeating Big East Champion UConn in the season opener and had a 2-3 record after their first tournament. The Bison would win program-record 11 straight games before losing to Providence College (March 3). Howard hosted No. 8/9 Tennessee (March 11), which was the first time the program hosted a nationally ranked opponent.
 
The squad is currently led by Bianca Worthy (Goodyear, Ariz.), who is batting .398 with 14 RBIs on the season. Howard is also led by catcher/utility Merci Hart (batting .333 with 16 RBIs), shortstop Sidney Fletcher (batting .296 with 16 RBIs and three home runs) and first baseman Kenna Higa (Honolulu), who is batting .323 on the season with 15 RBIs and one home run. Junior catcher Alyssa Vasquez (Downey, Calif.) is batting .316 with 18 RBIs and outfielder Maryn Jordan (San Diego) is batting .434 with nine RBIs. Freshman utility player Angel Riggins (San Diego), was named the MEAC Rookie of the Week (March 20) as she has a batting average of .370 on the season.
 
On the mound, the Lady Bison have been excellent, only allowing 3.25 ERA in 25 games played. The trio of Amelia Weber (Montclair, Calif.), Mia Gonzales (Atwater, Calif.) and Julia Holt (Tucson, Ariz.) have dominated on the mound, as they have combined to win 17 games with only four losses. Weber has a record of 7-3 when in the circle and holds an earned run average of 4.34 in 14 appearances. Gonzalez has a record of 6-1 while having an earned run average of 2.50 in 14 appearances. Holt holds a 4-0 record in 14 appearances while having an earned run average of 1.17
 
SOUTH CAROLINA STATE
 
On the season, South Carolina State has a 4-13 record (2-1 MEAC) heading into the weekend. The Bulldogs have won against Alabama A&M, Saint Peter's, and Norfolk State twice. They won the series against Norfolk State to open MEAC play, as they won two of the three games against the Spartans. The star player on the Bulldogs is sophomore outfielder Madison Boyd, who is batting .425 with eight RBIs.
 
LAST TIMEOUT
 
The Lady Bison won their last series against North Carolina Central, winning two of the three games. Howard lost the first game 3-1 and won the second and third games by scores of 8-3 and 12-3.
 
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
 
On March 29-30, the Bison continue their homestand against Maryland Eastern Shore for Easter weekend. Friday's (March 29) doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. while Saturday's single-game showdown is slated for noon.
