Men’s Basketball Looks to Bounce Back at Delaware State

Bison face Hornets in a crucial MEAC showdown

DOVER, Del. (February 4, 2024) - Howard University men's basketball team looks to shake off a tough 63-61 setback to Hampton in the Invesco QQQ Legacy Classic Saturday (Feb. 3) when it takes on the much-improved Hornets of Delaware State (DSU) in a key Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) match Monday (Feb. 5) at 7:30 p.m., inside the Memorial Gymnasium.

LAST TIMEOUT
 
On Feb. 3, sophomore forward Dom Campbell (Scarborough, Maine) and junior guard Bryce Harris (Brentwood, N.Y.) each recorded double-doubles but a lack of production from the remaining starters proved to be the difference as the Bison fell, 63-61, to Hampton in the Invesco QQQ Legacy Classic at the Prudential Center.
 
Campbell led the way with 18 points and 10 rebounds while Harris tallied 16 points and 14 boards. The duo combined for 14-of-31 from the floor.

Last season, the Bison won a nail biter, 86-85, in Dover (February 11, 2023). It was their fourth in a row and sixth-of-the-last-seven to lead the series, 12-10, since 2006.
 
HOWARD
 
The Bison (9-14, 3-3 MEAC) are led by Harris (15.9 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 56-percent shooting from the floor, team-leading 22 total blocks & 21 total steals), graduate forward Seth Towns (15.0 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 51 total assists, 17 total steals, 10 total blocks, 46 three pointers made & 83-percent from the free throw line), junior guard Marcus Dockery (13.0 ppg, 2.9 rpg, team-leading 56 three pointers made, career-high 42 total assists & 82-percent from the free throw line), graduate guard Isiah Warfield (8.2 ppg, 3.2 rpg, team-best 88-percent from the free throw line & 39 total assists) and Campbell (8.6 ppg, 4.7 rpg & 51-percent shooting from the field).
 
DELAWARE STATE
 
DSU (10-12, 3-3 MEAC) is coming off a tough 65-64 loss at Norfolk State Saturday (Feb. 3).
 
The Hornets are led by senior guard Martaz Robinson (16.4 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 48 total steals & 82-percent shooting from the free throw line), sophomore guard Jevin Muniz (14.8 ppg, 3.9 rpg & 69 total assists), freshman guard Deywilk Tavarez (10.9 ppg, 3.4 rpg & team-high 72 total assists), junior forward Wesley Oba (6.8 ppg & 6.3 rpg ) and redshirt junior center Raymond Somerville (3.7 ppg, 2.6 rpg & team-high 13 blocks).
 
The Hornets have already surpassed last year's win total and their three losses during the current streak by a margin of just four points.
 
MEAC STATS
 
HOWARD
 
The Bison lead the MEAC in three-point shooting percentage (35-percent) and three pointers made (7.7 per game).
 
Individually, Towns is making a strong bid for MEAC Player of the Year. He is third in three-point shooting (39-percent) and three pointers made per game (2.3), sixth in rebounding (6.6 per game), eighth in scoring (15.0 ppg), fifth in free throw shooting (83-percent) and sixth in assists.
 
Harris is also a strong candidate for both MEAC Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year.
 
The 6-foot-4 junior is first in field goal percentage (56-percent), fifth in blocked shots, second in rebounding, fifth in scoring and 10th in free throw shooting (71-percent).
 
Dockery leads the MEAC in three pointers made (2.6 per game) and three-point shooting percentage (39-percent) and 11th in scoring (13.0 ppg).
 
DELAWARE STATE
 
The Hornets lead the MEAC in rebounding margin (plus 4.6).
 
Individually, Robinson is second in scoring, fifth in field goal percentage (44-percent), second in steals, sixth in free throw shooting (83-percent), seventh in rebounding, ninth in three pointers made and 10th assists.
 
Muniz is second in assist/turnover ratio, fifth in assists, sixth in scoring and ninth in three pointers made.
 
Tavarez is third in assists and steals and fifth in assists/turnover ratio.
 
Oba is fourth in rebounding.
 
BISON NOTES
  • Howard has had a challenging nonconference schedule with road games at Georgia Tech (ACC), James Madison (Sun Belt), Rutgers (Big Ten), Penn (Ivy League) and UC Santa Barbara (Big West). They have also hosted Cincinnati (Big 12) and Yale (Ivy League).
  • The Bison have started 10 different starting lineups due to injuries.
  • Seven Howard players have 10 or more steals.
  • Harris has been named the MEAC Defensive Player of the Week four times and Towns was named MEAC Player of the Week once this season.
  • Dockery has already surpassed his single assists totals (42), compared to only 31 last year.
  • The Bison bench has been tested this season with the rash of injuries.
  • Odom, the MEAC Preseason Player of the Year, has missed the last 10 games (back injury) and his availability is questionable as is that of graduate guard Jelani Williams (wrist injury).
  • The trio of Towns, Harris and Dockery rank among the Top 13 in the MEAC in minutes played, averaging over 32 per game.
