NORFOLK, Va. (February 14, 2024) – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) uncovered its softball weekly accolades where Howard University had a pair of Bison acknowledged for outstanding performances during opening weekend.
Graduate outfielder
Bianca Worthy (Goodyear, Ariz.) and junior pitcher
Mia Gonzales (Atwater, Calif.) took home MEAC Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.
Through five games, Worthy went 8-of-17 (.471) with six RBIs and five runs scored. In the season opener against UConn (Feb. 9), the Arizona native drove in three RBIs while scoring twice en route to an 8-7 victory over the 2023 Big East Champions.
In four appearances (two starts), Gonzales tossed 12.0 innings with four strikeouts. In Saturday's (Feb. 10) victory over Seattle, she threw her second career complete-game shutout, pitching five innings while allowing only two hits.
Rookie
Merci Hart (Los Angeles) earned honorable mention after recording a .400 batting average (6-of-15) with three walks.
North Carolina Central's Kendall Smith was named MEAC Rookie of the Week.
The Bison return to action February 16 at 2 p.m., when they face Prairie View A&M in the HBCU Invitational in Covington, Ga.
