Women’s Basketball Closes Out Nonconference Play at American

Bison travel crosstown to face Eagles

WASHINGTON (December 28, 2024) – Howard University women's basketball team closes out its nonconference slate at crosstown rival American (AU). Tipoff is set for 12:30 p.m.

On Dec. 21, graduate guard Destiny Howell (Queens, N.Y.) scored a team-high 14 points and freshman guard Saniyah King (Washington) and junior forward Nile Miller (Haddonfield, N.J.) added 13 points and 11 points, respectively, but the Bison came up just short, 68-66, to Northwestern in the consolation game of the Hawk Classic in Philadelphia, hosted by Saint Joe's.
 
AMERICAN
 
American (0-10) is still looking for its first win of the season after dropping a 64-51 road loss at Monmouth Saturday (Dec. 21). The Eagles led, 46-43, at the end of the third period but the Hawks outscored AU, 21-5 in the final quarter to hand them their 10th straight loss. The Eagles were led Laura Nogues with 18 points, Cecelia Kay with 9 points and Ivy Bales with 8 points and 10 rebounds and 3 steals.
 
SERIES RECORD
 
Howard (6-8) has won two-in-a-row, including last year's 75-57 win at The Burr (Dec. 30). The two have split the last four meetings.
 
THE COACHES
 
The Eagles are coached by Tiffany Coll (UMBC, '03), who is in her third season. Howard is led by Ty Grace (New Haven, '99), who is in her 10th season.

Howell, the sharpshooting graduate guard, has moved up on the school all-time scoring list to No. 18 with 1,133 points and counting...Howell has made 19 straight free throws, dating back to Oct. 17...King, the early season favorite for MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) Rookie of the Year, was named Rookie of the Week for the fifth time this season Monday (Dec. 23) after being named to the Hawk Classic All-Tournament Team…King leads the team in assists (68) and minutes played (31.3 per game)...The Bison have held their opponents to 64.2 points per game and 24-percent from three-point land...The Bison are averaging 3.4 blocks and 14.4 points off turnovers…Howard is averaging under 60 points and shooting under 24-percent from three-point distance...in the past two games, King has only one turnover while averaging over 30 minutes of play...Howard has taken care of the ball with a total of only 15 turnovers combined in the past two games.
 
AMERICAN
 
The Eagles are allowing 70.7 points to their opponents…AU has had problems on defense as their opponents are shooting over 40-percent from the field...on offense, the Eagles are averaging 18 turnovers per game, which their opponents have converted into 18 points...the Eagles are dependent upon some young players in team-leading scorer Kay, Driscoll and Pingree, which are all freshmen.
