Women’s Hoops Welcomes Old Dominion on Education Day

Bison look to take down Monarchs at The Burr

WASHINGTON (December 16, 2024) – Howard University women's basketball team wraps up its two-game home stand Tuesday (Dec. 17), facing Old Dominion (ODU) in a nonconference showdown inside The Burr on Education Day. Tipoff is slated for noon.

Friday (Dec. 14), junior forward Zennia Thomas (Cleveland) scored 11 of her game-high 19 points in the second half, freshman guard Saniyah King (Washington) tallied seven of her 14 points after intermission to help the Bison to a 61-54 win over Army at Burr Gymnasium.
 
ODU
 
ODU (6-4) dropped a tough 59-58 decision to East Carolina on the road Sunday (Dec. 15) for their second straight defeat. The Monarchs were led by En'Dya Buford with 25 points and 14 rebounds and Simaru Fields, who contributed 14 in a losing cause.
 
SERIES RECORD
 
This is the third meeting between the two schools. ODU won, 75-54, on December 3, 2014, and prevailed, 83-64, the next year (December 15, 2015).
 
THE COACHES
 
ODU is coached by former WNBA standout Delisha Milton Jones (Florida, '97), who is in her fifth season. Howard is led by Ty Grace (New Haven,'99), who is in her 10th season.

Graduate guard Destiny Howell (Queens, N.Y.) had scored in double figures in the first 10 games this season, the streak was snapped versus Army (Dec. 13) …The sharpshooting guard has moved up on the school all-time scoring list to No. 18 with 1,110 points and counting...Howell has had problems offensively the past three games, connecting on only 10-of-36 from the floor, including 5-of-28 from beyond the arc…King, the early season favorite for MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) Rookie of the Year, was named Rookie of the Week for the four time this season, leading the team in assists and minutes played (34.3 per game)…Thomas has come on strong, scoring 59 points in the last three games while grabbing 47 rebounds in the past four outings...Thomas was named honorable mention this week.... Redshirt sophomore Tyana Walker (Leawood, Kan.) has also come on strong with 26 points in the past two games, shooting 83-percent from the free throw line on the season.
 
ODU
 
The Monarchs are holding their opponents to 60 points per game and under 21-percent from behind the arc...ODU is averaging 9.0 steals per game...Jones is one of the most celebrated athletes in both college and the pros...ODU has played two nationally ranked teams in Ohio State and NC State...Howard and ODU have a common opponent in East Carolina.
