GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (September 4, 2023) – Howard University men's golf team opened its 2023 fall slate 10 strokes back after day one at the Folds of Honor Collegiate, hosted by Michigan State University. The round took place at the American Dunes Golf Club (71-par, 7,086 yards) in Gran Haven, Mich.
HU shot 8-over par (292), seven strokes better than No. 32 Kansas (299, +15), and sits in 12
th place.
Graduate
Gregory Odom Jr. (Memphis, Tenn.) led the Bison, shooting even par (71) while tying for 15
th in the standings. The Memphis native recorded four birdies on the afternoon.
Graduate transfer
C.M. Mixon (Bowling Green, Ken.) made his Bison debut, registering 1-over par, including five birdies, and sitting tied for 20
th place.
Graduate
Everett Whiten Jr. (Chesapeake, Va.) opened the day with three bogeys on the front nine but finished strong with back-to-back birdies on holes six and seven.
Four-year Bison
Joshua Siplin (Orlando, Fla.) shot 1-over (37) after nine holes of play but was unable to keep the momentum going as he accumulated three bogeys down the stretch.
South Carolina leads the field after producing 2-under par (282) in day one. No. 19 Arizona and Indiana sit second (283, -1) and third (284, E), respectively.
Individually, North Carolina State's Nick Mathews has a slim one stroke advantage after recording a 67 (-4). Kansas' Cecil Belisle, Indiana's Noah Gillard and Memphis' Esteban Vazquez are tied for second at 3-under par (68).
Howard continues play Tuesday (Sept. 5) with Day Two of the Folds of Honor Collegiate. Tee time is slated for 11:40 a.m. on the Golf Channel via the Peacock App.
