NORMAN, Okla. (August 10, 2023) – The Golf Coaches of America (GCAA) revealed its 2022-23 Outstanding Team Academic Award Recipients where the Howard University men's golf team made the All-Academic Team. The announcement came Thursday afternoon.
To achieve this honor, the Bison accumulated a 3.0 grade point average or higher during the 2022-23 academic year.
"I am super proud of these guys," said Howard Director of Golf
Sam Puryear. "They have continued to excel both in the classroom and on the golf course."
The 10-man roster included
Anthony Ford (Atlanta),
Hugo Garcia (Dubai, UAE),
Justin Green (Chesapeake, Va.),
Richard Jones Jr. (Mastic, N.Y.),
Curtis Merritt (Wareham, Mass.),
Gregory Odom Jr. (Memphis),
Edrine Okong (Lugazi, Uganda),
Joshua Siplin (Orlando, Fla.),
Marcus Smith Jr. (Rockford, Ill.) and
Everett Whiten Jr. (Chesapeake, Va.).
Overall, 266 schools across six divisions earned a GCAA Outstanding Team Academic Award.
Sacred Heart (NCAA Division I), Florida Southern (NCAA Division II), Kentucky State (HBCU), Carleton (NCAA Division III), South Carolina Beaufort (NAIA), Andrew (NJCAA Division I) and South Mountain (NJCAA Division II) were all named 2022-23 Academic National Champions for finishing with the top GPA in their respective divisions.
HU opens the fall season at the Folds of Honor Collegiate (Sept. 5-6), hosted by Michigan State University.
