NORFOLK, Va. (MAY 9, 2023) – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) revealed its 2023 Softball All-Academic Team where Howard University saw 10 Bison recognized for their accomplishments inside the classroom. The announcement came Tuesday morning.
Collectively, the league honored 74 student-athletes from the conference's eight softball-playing institutions who have achieved academic success.
"I want to congratulate our softball student-athletes who have excelled in the classroom this season," MEAC Commissioner
Sonja Stills said. "So much of the focus on intercollegiate athletics focuses on what happens on the field, what happens in the classroom is the ultimate goal, and these young ladies are to be commended for their accomplishments."
The 10 student-athletes acknowledged for their efforts off the field included
Kalita Dennis (Elk Grove, Calif.),
Zafirah Doss (Hayward, Calif.),
Sidney Fletcher (Whittier, Calif.),
Mia Gonzales (Atwater, Calif.),
Jade Greene (Upper Marlboro, Md.),
Madison Harris (Slidell, La.),
Shalon McNeal (Lima, Ohio),
Payton Quinonez (Tulare, Calif.),
Lealani Ricks (Madera, Calif.) and
Morgan Thornton (Manassas, Va.).
Norfolk State (NSU) and North Carolina Central led the way with 14 student-athletes apiece.
MEAC sophomore, junior and senior student-athletes with a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average (GPA), along with transfer student-athletes who have been in residence at the institution for at least one year, are eligible for All-Academic accolades.
HU begins its quest for another conference title Wednesday (May 10), taking on No. 5 Coppin State in the MEAC Tournament Opening Round. First pitch is set for 9 a.m. at NSU Softball Field.
