(May 12, 2023) – After knocking off rival Norfolk State (NSU) Thursday (May 11), No. 4 Howard Softball faces No. 6 Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) in an elimination game at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament Friday, May 12. The opening pitch is set to be thrown at noon.

MATCHUP PREVIEW
The Lady Bison hold a 29-13 against UMES, dating back to 2005, with Howard sweeping the Hawks in conference play just a few weeks ago.
HOWARD
HU 19-25 (10-9 MEAC) bounced back Thursday afternoon, eliminating No. 2 Norfolk State in a resounding 5-1 victory.
Sophomore
Alyssa Vasquez (Downey, Calif.) and graduate
Kalita Dennis (Elk Grove, Calif.) both had two hits in the effort, with Vasquez batting a run in and scoring one herself. Freshman
Amelia Weber (Montclair, Calif.) ended with two RBIs and the win as the starting pitcher.
This week, five players from Howard were given postseason honors. Sophomore standouts
Sidney Fletcher (Whittier, Calif.) and Vasquez were named to the All-MEAC First Team, Dennis made All-MEAC Second Team and both sophomore
Lealani Ricks (Madera, Calif.) and Weber were selected to the All-MEAC Third Team.
EASTERN SHORE
UMES 14-29 (8-10 MEAC) knocked off the number one-seeded Morgan State Bears Thursday, 11-7, keeping their title hopes alive.
Their win on Thursday was a historic moment for the team, marking their first postseason tournament win since 1995. A solid hitting day, along with 10 errors from the Bears, helped them secure the victory, with the Hawks getting eight hits and 10 RBIs.
Eastern Shore also had some postseason honorees this season. Rookie Jaycee Holt (Birchwood, Tenn.) made All-MEAC First Team, junior Kelsie Ekstrom (Riverside, Calif.) and senior Nola Mountain (Surrey, British Columbia, Canada) made All-MEAC Second Team and freshman Katelyn Smitchko (Clarence, Pa.) made All-MEAC Third Team.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
With a win over Eastern Shore, the Lady Bison would stay alive and face their next opponent, No. 5 Coppin State, at 3 p.m. in a rematch from the first game of the tournament immediately following their game against UMES.
