NORFOLK, Va. (May 11, 2023) – Howard University women's track & field team claimed its second straight Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Championships, registering 241.5 points during the three-day event.
HU won its third overall title with seven first place finishes on the final day.
"It's great to put the finishing touches on a triple crown season and set some meet records in the process," said Howard Director of Track & Field
David Oliver, who was named meet Most Outstanding Coach after the event. "It was a complete team effort and everybody stepped up and contributed. I'm proud of these women capping a great 2022-2023 season, now we turn our focus to the national level events."
Senior
De'ja Dade (DeSoto, Texas), junior
Darci Khan (Stockbridge, Ga.) and sophomores
Tiffani-Rae Pittman (Bowie, Md.) and
Lamaria Washington (Miami) opened the day with a victory in the 4x100 relay, clocking in at 44.80.
Individually, Pittman won a pair of races in the 100-meter dash (11.58) and 200-meter dash (23.39).
Dade and sophomore
Lamaria Washington (Miami) also took part in those events, finishing sixth (11.96) and fourth (11.78), respectively, in the 100-meter dash and fourth (24.27) and seventh (24.65), respectively, in the 200-meter dash.
Khan and
Kaya-Rae Dunbar (Burtonsville, Md.) placed first (13.15) and second (13.48), respectively, in the 100-meter hurdles. Senior
Jessica Wright (Durham, N.C.), graduate
Cathrina Morris (Auburndale, Fla.), rookie
Jazmyn Wajd (Tampa, Fla.) and sophomore
Jasmyn Hunter (Flossmoor, Ill.) also competed, earning fourth (13.60), fifth (13.89), sixth (13.93) and eighth (14.15), respectively.
Wright took the top spot in the 400-meter hurdles with a 57.23 time. Morris, newcomer
Aniya Woodruff (Harrisburn, N.C.) and senior
Monika Williams (Denver) also participated where they earned third (59.69), second (58.37) and sixth (1:01.84), respectively.
Senior
Melanie White (Orlando, Fla.) and second-year Bison
Camille Egbula (Simpsonville, S.C.) went first (4:35.16) and third (4:40.14), respectively, in the 1500-meter run. Both Bison also competed in the 800-meter run, taking fourth (2:17.72) and fifth (2:18.08), respectively.
Senior
Breanna McDonald (Bethesda, Md.) and sophomore
Joslyn Crosby (Bossier City, La.) captured second (18:31.23) and third (18:34.80), respectively, in the 5000-meter run.
Pittman, Woodruff, Wright and rookie
Kiya Lawson (Montclair, N.J.) capped off the day with a victory in the 4x400 relay, recording a 3:33.86 time.
Other notable performance on the track included freshman
Sanaa Morris (Bermuda) taking seventh overall in the 400-meter dash (56.67 meters).
In the field events, Wajd, senior
Ja'Tae Joyner (Bowie, Md.) and freshman
Ija Mumford (Winston-Salem, N.C.) placed in the triple jump, landing sixth (11.90 meters), seventh (11.88 meters) and eighth (11.85 meters), respectively.
Morgan State finished in second with 138 points, followed by Norfolk State (102.5 points).
On May 24-27, several Bison travel to Jacksonville, Fla., for the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds.
