WASHINGTON (April 8, 2023) – Howard University men's track & field team won the 2023 Bison Classic, hosted by HU and Gallaudet University, scoring 198 points. The one-day event took place on the campus of Gallaudet.
Overall, Howard won six events on the day.
Graduate
Dylan Beard (Baltimore) and seniors
Jermanie Byrd (Miami Gardens, Fla.),
Ashton Daniel (Athens, Ga.) and
Ja'Leak Perry (Atlanta) highlighted the day with a victory in the 4x100 relay, clocking in at 40.90.
Individually on the track, senior
Ayoade Adebiyi (Virginia Beach, Va.) claimed the top spot in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a 9:53.14 mark.
In the field events, second-year Bison
Kyle Fisher (Duluth, Ga.) won a pair of events in the long jump and triple jump. The Georgia native produced 7.03 meters and 14.91 meters, respectively.
Fellow classmate
Sean Wray (Stafford, Va.) finished second behind Fisher in the long jump (6.69 meters).
Senior thrower
Ezra Monteiro (New Port, R.I.) placed first overall in the hammer (48.78 meters), edging out teammate rookie
Andre Prince (Windsor, Conn.), who threw 44.61 meters.
Monteiro also competed in the javelin, earning runner-up with a toss of 45.86 meters. Two-time Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Javelin Champion
Mekhi Abbott won gold in the event after throwing 56.54 meters.
Delaware State placed second overall, recording 148 points, followed by Gallaudet (59 points).
HU will head to Gainesville, Fla., for the Tom Jones Invitational, hosted by Florida (April 14-15).
