Senior Spotlight Featuring Tamar Wells

A chat with MEAC Champion Tamar Wells

WASHINGTON (April 4, 2023) – Howard University sophomore Media, Journalism and Film major, Spanish minor Sareyah Rudd caught up with women's volleyball senior Tamar Wells (Apopka, Florida) for a quick Q and A session.

Q: When did your interest in volleyball initially begin?
A: I started liking volleyball after playing at my after-school program. I was in the seventh grade.

Q: What do you like most about volleyball?
A: I like the adrenaline rush that comes with volleyball. The chaos because you never know what is going to happen.

Q: What kept you motivated?
A: My teammates kept me motivated, seeing their passion for the game made me want to perform my best every time.

Q: How has playing volleyball impacted your life?
A: Volleyball made me realize that I work well with others when we all have a similar goal in mind. It has changed my life.

Q: Using one word, how do you think your teammates would have described you?
A: Weird, in a good way (lol)

Q: Who is your favorite athlete, and why?
A: Serena Williams (former American tennis superstar) because she is an icon and inspiration to all young black women athletes.

Q: What other sport would you play if not volleyball?
A: Honestly, I would not have played any sport because being a student-athlete for so long made me realize that it is time to part ways (lol). But volleyball will forever have my heart regardless.

Q: How did you manage your time between training, school and extracurricular activities?
A: Time management was very challenging because I am a design student. Many occasions during the season, especially traveling to away matches, I was doing work at the airports or bus before and after matches. Not the best way of doing things, but I made sure to manage my time effectively to get my work done.

Q: What or who will you miss at Howard?
A: I will miss Howard, of course; the chaos and excitement Howard brings (lol). I will miss campus life, even the random fire alarms that go off at 3 a.m. (lol). I will miss practicing and playing in matches with my teammates. Those moments playing or on the bus or in the locker room meant a lot to me.

Q: Any last words or advice you would like to give to future Bison?
A: Dear future Bison, try to be present every day and live in the moment. Do not worry too much about the future, things always fall into place. Take lots of pictures and videos, keep those memories close. Even when times are hard, known that you are never alone.
