Senior Spotlight Featuring Elijah Coleman

A chat with MEAC Champion Elijah Coleman

WASHINGTON (April 12, 2023) - Howard University freshman broadcast journalism major Amani Clark-Bey continued the 2023 Senior Spotlight series, featuring Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Champion Elijah Coleman (Rockwall, Texas) from the football team.

Q: What drew you to Howard University?
A: Coming in as a freshman, my first initial thought after getting my football scholarship and doing the research was the culture and the big names that came with it. You think of Anthony Anderson (American Actor), Taraji P. Henson (American Actress) and Chadwick Boseman (American Actor). That is what really brought me to Howard. I wanted to be a part of something that was already established.

Q: Who is your biggest supporter?
A: My biggest supporter throughout my whole athletic career is my dad. He would always take me to and from practices, camps around the country when I was trying to get recruited and he was always the one who was able to come to my college games.

Q: What is your favorite memory as a Bison?
A: All-time favorite memory was playing Morgan State my junior year. My first ESPN game that I started and it was our first home night game in over 25 years.

In the second quarter, I got an interception, which was our first turnover of the season and we had to do it big. I got my interception and took it all the way to the end zone and posed in front of the camera. It was a good moment for our guys and we got the crowd into it. That is the biggest moment I will take away from being at Howard.

Q: What does your future look like after Howard?
A: My immediate future is coaching at Howard. I will be coming in as an assistant defensive backs coach. I will graduate with an applied math degree. If college coaching takes off, then that is where I will go.

Q: What is your advice to the incoming 2023 freshman class as they navigate their way through Howard on and off the field?
A: My advice is to be a sponge. Do not come in with any unrealistic expectations. I would say soak in as much as you can and be in the moment. Take in all the ups and downs because you never know where it is going to be taken from you, especially in our game of football.

Q: Describe your legacy as a Bison?
A: I have always been a staple of consistency. I feel my legacy has been a guy that came in and stayed consistent. I always pride myself in playing at a high level while studying at a high-level academic institution like Howard. I feel like consistency is what people think of me as I leave Howard. A guy that came in and did his job right the first time and accomplished everything that he said he was going to accomplish.
