DOVER, Del. (February 11, 2023) – Howard University women's basketball team secured a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) road win at Delaware State (DSU), 57-42, at Memorial Hall Gym.
With the win, HU improved to 10-11 (6-2 MEAC) while extending its win streak to four. Additionally, the Bison have now won 13 straight against Delaware State.
Graduate
Aziah Hudson (Massapequa, N.Y.) led the Bison with 17 points in 25 minutes of action, followed by third-year Bison
Destiny Howell (Queens, N.Y.) with 15 points and six assists (career-high).
"We let up as a team last time we played them," said Hudson on HU playing Delaware State back on Jan. 7 in D.C. "We weren't hitting shots and they started to creep back into the game, which is why we only won by two. So, this time, we kept that lead and played our game."
Right off the bat, senior forward
Brooklynn Fort-Davis (Chicago) won the opening tip-off and Hudson put the first points on the board. The Bison wasted no time ballooning the lead throughout the first quarter, continuing their momentum into the second.
Howard maintained their momentum on both sides throughout the entire first half, ending with a 21-point halftime lead, 31-10.
After intermission, Howard shot 50-percent (7-of-14) in the third period and the Bison continued their passionate play with multiple "and-one" plays.
DSU managed to creep back within striking distance, but Howard held Delaware State to only 24-percent shooting (4-of-17) in the final frame.
The Bison outrebounded the Hornets, 41-35, co-led by forwards
Krislyn Marsh (Houston) and
Kaiya Creek (Seat Pleasant, Md.) with six boards apiece.
"We need to come in and be aggressive on the boards every game," Creek stated. "Coach Ty always emphasizes that rebounding is going to win us the game, so we need to work on winning the rebounding battle going into the second half of conference play."
For DSU (4-15, 2-6 MEAC), Savannah Brooks had 17 points in a losing effort.
Monday (Feb. 13), Howard will be back at Burr Gymnasium to host the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
