Women’s Basketball Rolls Past North Carolina Central

Bison put on a dominant performance

WASHINGTON (January 28, 2023) - The Howard University women's basketball team rolled past North Carolina Central University, 75-54, resulting in their second win-in-a-row in front of a packed Burr Gymnasium.

With the victory, HU improved to 8-11 (4-2 MEAC) while continuing its dominance in the series, dating back to 2011 (13-2).

Junior guard Destiny Howell (Queens, N.Y.) finished with a game-high 24 points, followed by graduate guard Aziah Hudson (Massapequa, N.Y.) with 16 points.

"The more we share the ball, the more everyone scores with ease," said Howell postgame. "When my team needs me to score or make a play, I try to make the right basketball play."

The pace of the game was set early on after NCCU scored off the opening tip. After a few back-and-forth scoring runs, Howard pulled away from the Eagles with a 14-3 run and held a double-digit advantage after one, 22-10.

In the second stanza, both squads struggled from the field, but the Bison took a 39-26 lead into intermission.

In the third quarter, the Bison found their rhythm and shot 50-percent (6-of-12) in the period and put the game out-of-reach.

HU won the rebounding battle, 45-36, led by senior forward Brooklynn Fort-Davis (Chicago) with a team-best eight boards.

"We must focus on staying consistent," said Fort-Davis. "We are playing well right now and I expect us to get back to a championship-caliber team."

For NCCU (9-12, 3-3 MEAC), Jerni Kiaku produced a team-high 17 points in the loss.

The Lady Bison wrap up their home stand with another conference match inside Burr Gymnasium Monday (Jan. 30) at 5:30 p.m. against South Carolina State University.
