WASHINGTON (January 21, 2023) – Howard University junior guard
Destiny Howell (Queens, N.Y.) scored a team-high 19 points and graduate guard
Aziah Hudson (Massapequa, N.Y.) added 13 points, but another dismal third quarter proved to be too much to overcome as the Bison fell, 71-49, to Morgan State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) matchup at Burr Gymnasium.
The Bison (6-11, 2-2 MEAC) were able to hang close with the Bears as Howell and Hudson combined for 18 of their team's 22 points. Howard trailed, 32-22, at intermission, still within striking distance.
Then, Morgan State (10-6, 3-0 MEAC) employed the same formula from Howard's previous opponent, Norfolk State Monday (Jan.14), putting together a 22-6 run in the third quarter to open a 54-38 lead heading into the final stanza.
The Bears parlayed some tough defense on Howell and Hudson, along with taking advantage of Bison miscues.
The duo of Howell and Hudson, the team's two leading scorers, combined for 11-of-23 from the field, but the rest of the team converted on only 7-of-24.
Howard did not help its cause as senior forward
Brooklynn Fort-Davis (Chicago), the team's third leading scorer, failed to score in 20 minutes of play and junior guard
Kaniyah Harris (Capital Heights, Md.), who came into the game as one of the top players in the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio, recorded one assist and was charged with a season-high five turnovers.
Morgan State was led by Ja'Niah Henson, who led all scorers with 26 points, and Charlene Shepherd finished with 16 points and seven rebounds in the win.
Howard will look to get back on the winning track when it hosts Coppin State Monday (Jan. 23) at 5:30 p.m. in The Burr.
