NORFOLK, Va. (January 14, 2023) – Howard University senior forward
Brooklynn Fort-Davis (Chicago) scored a team-high 10 points, but a 21-5 second quarter doomed HU as the Bison fell, 64-37, at Norfolk State (NSU) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) contest at Echols Memorial Hall.
The loss snapped a three-game win streak for the Bison (6-10, 2-1 MEAC) while the streaking Spartans (15-3, 3-0 MEAC) captured their sixth straight victory.
Howard kept it close early, trailing 12-10 at the end of the first quarter.
The Spartans began to flex in the second quarter, holding the visitors to 2-of-11 shooting to put the game away early.
The Bison, who were playing their fifth game without All-MEAC selection senior point guard,
Iyanna Warren (Accokeek, Md.), struggled to get points.
Conference-leading scorer junior guard
Destiny Howell (Queens, N.Y.) came into the game averaging 15 points per game, but the Norfolk State defense limited her to only eight points on 3-of-10 from the floor, including 2-of-8 from the three-point arc.
Graduate guard
Aziah Hudson (Massapequa, N.Y.), who was coming off her career-high 21-point effort at Maryland Eastern Shore (Jan. 9), finished with seven points on 2-of-13 shooting, 1-of-11 from the three-point line.
The Spartans were led by Kierra Wheeler with a double-double (21 points & 13 rebounds) and Camille Downs and Makoye Diawara contributed 11 points and 10 points, respectively.
Howard will aim to get back on track when it hosts Morgan State University Saturday (Jan. 21) at 2 p.m. in Burr Gymnasium.
