WASHINGTON (September 23, 2022) – Howard University men's and women's swimming and diving teams got off to a good start Friday at the annual Potomac Relays, hosted by American University, setting a pair of new facility records.
Overall, the men's team scored 466 points and finished runner-up while the women placed fourth with a 366 score.
The men's 200-yard medley relay squad, consisting of senior
Miles Simon (Atlanta), junior
Spencer Miles (Lynchburg, Va.) and sophomores
Brenton Cooper (Baton Rouge, La.) and
Darin Johnson (Atascocita, Texas), set the tone with a first-place finish while producing a new facility mark (1:32.07).
The trio of seniors
Mark-Anthony Beckles (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago) and
Arion Solomon (Fairburn, Ga.) and newcomer
Taj Benton (Baltimore) would go on to win the 300-yard Fly Relay, registering a 2:29.47 time.
Simon and Solomon picked up their second top relay finishes of the day in the 400-yard medley, along with fellow classmate
Luke-Kennedy Thompson (Nassau, Bahamas) and third-year Bison
Langston Weddington (Marietta, Ga.).
HU men capped the event, winning the 200-yard Free relay (1:21.82), where Simon posted the second-fastest time in the nation at 19.89, a new facility record.
On the women's side, graduate
Madison Freeland (Glenside, Pa.), sophomore Kelsey Robinson (West Orange, N.J.) and freshmen
Eryn Levy (Humble, Texas) and Zuzu Nwaze earned the Bison's sole victory in the 500 Free Relay with a time of 4:42.14.
The Bison host Georgetown University Saturday, October 1 at 1 p.m. in the historic Battle at the Burr.
