Rising senior set to compete for his homeland in Guadeloupe

WASHINGTON (June 23, 2022) – Howard University rising senior Mark-Anthony Beckles (Chaguanas, Trinidad & Tobago) prepares to compete in the inaugural 2022 Caribbean Games in Guadeloupe. The five-day event starts Wednesday, June 29 and concludes Sunday, July 3.

Beckles will represent Team Trinidad & Tobago in these games.

"Mark has been a staple for our program since his arrival to Howard," said Howard Director of Swimming & Diving Nicholas Askew. "This is a great opportunity for him to represent his country. His teammates and the Howard University family will be watching and cheering for him."

In his junior campaign, Beckles broke multiple school records while leading the Bison to a second-place finish at the 2022 Northeast Conference (NEC) Championships in February. He was also selected NEC Swimmer of the Week twice (Oct. 20, 2021 & Nov. 17, 2021).

Currently, the Trinidad & Tobago native holds seven program marks, including a pair of individual records (100 Free & 100 Fly).

The historic first edition of the Caribbean Games will take place in Guadeloupe with more than 800 U-23 athletes from 29 countries. Each nation will compete in seven sports as they aim to make history.

The swimming competition begins Thursday, June 30 through Saturday, July 2 at the Inter-municipal Pool, located in Abymes, Guadeloupe.

On June 2, the men's swimming & diving program earned the 2021-22 NEC Winter Team Sportsmanship Award in their first year as a NEC associate. In the program's first full season, Howard men finished runner-up at the conference championships while shattering 20 total records (17 school and three meet) during the five-day span.
