MATCHUP PREVIEW
Friday's showdown will be the fifth meeting between HU and NSU this season with both clubs splitting the first four contests.
Wednesday (May 11), freshman
Alyssa Vasquez (Downey, Calif.) delivered a walk-off three-run homer in the eighth to lift the Bison over Norfolk State, 11-8, in the MEAC Tournament opening round.
HOWARD
Howard (28-22, 17-4 MEAC) enters the tournament as the No. 2 seed with this season's MEAC record being the best finish since winning back-to-back MEAC Northern Division titles (2009 & 2010). HU is seeking its second MEAC title in program history, first since 2007.
Vasquez has been on fire since the tournament began, batting .667 (6-of-9) with 10 RBIs, four runs scored, three doubles and a pair of homers, including the three-run walk-off versus NSU.
Before the tournament, eight Bison earned MEAC postseason honors, led by senior
Kalita Dennis (Elk Grove, Calif.) and freshman
Lealani Ricks (Madera, Calif.) receiving All-MEAC First Team honors.
NORFOLK STATE
Entering the tournament, Norfolk State (34-22, 16-5 MEAC) set a program record for wins in a season during the Div. I era (34). For most of the season, the Spartans were tied in the league standings with Morgan State, just as the preseason conference voting predicted.
Tuli Iosefa, MEAC Player of the Year, leads the Spartans, registering a .500 (5-of-10) batting average with six RBIs, four walks, three runs scored and two home runs in four tournament games.
LAST TIMEOUT
Thursday (May 12), the Bison dropped its first contest of the MEAC Tournament, falling to top seeded Morgan State, 12-5, at NSU Softball Field.
Vasquez continued her hot streak in the tourney, batting 3-of-4 with four RBIs and a pair runs scored in a losing effort.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
With a victory, HU advances to the title game where they will face top seeded Morgan State in a rematch. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. and will be streamed live on the
MEAC Digital Network on YouTube.
