Bison Secure Best MEAC Finish Since 2010

Softball Wraps Up League Play with Series Sweep at Delaware State

DOVER, Del. (May 1, 2022) – Howard University softball team wrapped up Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play with an 8-5 victory at Delaware State (DSU).

With the win, HU (26-20) complete the series sweep against DSU while finishing with 17-4 mark in league play, the program's best finish since winning the back-to-back MEAC Northern Division titles (2009 & 2010).

Howard had eight runs on 10 hits, led by senior Camille Navarro (Los Angeles) and freshman Sidney Fletcher (Whittier, Calif.) recording two hits each in the win.

HU took an early 2-0 lead after one and added another run in the second, thanks to Fletcher's RBI-double to center, bringing home senior Ayana Sallee (Chesapeake, Va.), 3-0.

After cutting the margin to one, 3-2, DSU tied the contest at three apiece on a throwing error.

Howard regained the momentum with four runs in the fourth and took a commanding 7-3 advantage after four innings.

Delaware State trimmed the deficit to three, 7-4, but a solo homer from senior Kalita Dennis (Elk Grove, Calif.) extended the lead back to four, 8-5.

DSU's Jaelyn Baker delivered a home run in the seventh, but the Lady Hornets' comeback bid would fall short.

Rookie Morgan Thornton (Manassas, Va.) secured her second win of the season, throwing four innings while allowing only three hits. Graduate Analise De La Roca (San Pedro, Calif.) picked up a three-inning save for the Bison.

For Delaware State (4-33, 3-17), Sandrea Hord and Yanique Spencer each had two hits in the loss.

Tuesday (May 3), Howard wraps up the regular season with a twinbill at Saint Peter's. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. in Jersey City, N.J.
