Softball Rallies to Grab Split at Morgan State

Bison win nightcap to secure split against Lady Bears

BALTIMORE (April 2, 2022) – Howard University softball team rallied in the nightcap to grab a 4-2 victory over Morgan State (MSU) after dropping game one, 4-3, at Lois T. Murray Field in Baltimore.

GAME TWO (Howard 4, Morgan State 2)

HU was limited to only three hits in game two but came up clutch when it mattered.

Both clubs were scoreless after three innings until senior Kalita Dennis (Elk Grove, Calif.) delivered an RBI-triple to right field and gave Howard the upper hand, 1-0.

Bottom four, Madison Nunez put the Lady Bears ahead after hitting a two-run single through the left side, 2-1.

Top half of the seventh, HU capitalized on a pair of Morgan State errors with a three-run double by senior Ayana Sallee (Chesapeake, Va.); thus, putting the Bison back on top, 4-2.

MSU threatened in the seventh with runners in scoring position, but graduate pitcher Analise De La Roca (San Pedro, Calif.) closed the Lady Bears' opportunity and picked up her eighth victory of the season.

Freshman Morgan Thornton (Manassas, Va.) earned the starting nod for HU, tossing 4.1 innings with three Ks in the no decision.

De La Roca faced 10 batters in 2.2 innings to secure the Bison win.

GAME ONE (Howard 3, Morgan State 4)

HU produced three runs on 10 hits, led by Dennis, junior Natalie Davila (Carson, Calif.) and newcomer Jade Greene (Upper Marlboro, Md.) each with two hits apiece.

MSU grabbed the early lead with an RBI-single by Victoria Fletcher, 1-0.

Top four, Dennis tied the contest with an RBI-double, bringing home fellow classmate Xzarria Simmons (Escondido, Calif.), 1-1.

Next inning, Davila and freshman standout Alyssa Vasquez (Downey, Calif.) drove in a pair of runs and gave the Bison a 3-1 cushion, but Morgan State responded with two runs in the bottom half and tied the game at 3-3 after five.

In their final at-bat, the Lady Bears' Tayven Rousseau delivered a walk-off RBI-double to give MSU to game one win.
