NORFOLK, Va. (March 4, 2022) – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) uncovered its men's basketball postseason honors where Howard University saw four Bison acknowledged for their incredible efforts during the 2021-22 regular season. The announcement came Friday afternoon.
Freshman star
Elijah Hawkins (Washington) headlined the Bison, earning three accolades, including 2022 MEAC Rookie of the Year. Graduate sharpshooter
Kyle Foster (Hampton, Va.) received All-MEAC First Team recognition while redshirt sophomore
Steve Settle, III (Glenarden, Md.) claimed All-MEAC Second Team. Graduate big man
Randall Brumant (Houston) took home a pair of awards: All-MEAC Third Team and All-Defensive Team.
Hawkins, who was also selected to the All-MEAC Second Team and All-Rookie Team, became the fifth Bison in eight years to win the league's Rookie of the Year award. This season, the D.C. native earned nine MEAC Rookie of the Week honors (Nov. 16, Nov. 23, Nov. 30, Jan. 18, Jan. 25, Feb. 1, Feb. 15, Feb. 22 & March 1) while ranking among the nation leaders in assists (5.6 apg/17
th) and steals per game (2.26/14
th).
In his final season, Foster burst onto the scene and instantly became one of the nation's top sharpshooters. The Virginia product won MEAC Player of the Week three times (Dec. 21, Feb. 8 & Feb. 15). Nearly all year long, he led the country in three-point field goal percentage, eclipsing over 46-percent (103-of-223). On Feb. 19, Foster joined the exclusive 1,000-point club in the win over Morgan State (Feb. 19) at the inaugural NBA HBCU Classic during the All-Star Weekend festivities.
Settle, who started all 28 games for the Bison, filled the stat sheet on both ends of the floor. This year, the DMV native ranked among the conference leaders in several categories, including scoring (13.8 ppg/4
th), field goal percentage (.495/5
th), free throw percentage (.789/4
th) and three-point field goal percentage (.354/9
th). He reached double figures in scoring 20 times this season, including four 20-point performances. On Dec. 28, Settle won MEAC Player of the Week.
In his first season as a Bison, Brumant anchored the defensive end while providing explosive dunks to the rim. The Houston native ranked second in field goal percentage (.628) while placing third overall in blocks (1.4 bpg). He started all 28 contests and scored double figures 12 times this season, including a season-high 22 points in the road win at Morgan State (Jan. 22). On Nov. 16, Brumant was named MEAC Defensive Player of the Week.
All awards, presented by TowneBank, were voted on by the conference's head men's basketball coaches and sports information directors.
Furthermore, the league announced its 2022 MEAC Men's Basketball Tournament bracket where Howard earned the No. 2 seed after going 9-5 in conference play. This year, HU led the league in several offensive categories, including points per game (77.1).
On March 9, No. 2 Howard takes on No. 7 Coppin State in the MEAC Tournament Quarterfinals. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. on ESPNU.
