VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (February 6, 2022) – Howard University men's and women's track and field teams closed out the weekend at the inaugural Richard Drake Invitational, hosted by Virginia Wesleyan University in Virginia Beach, Va.
Several Bison had outstanding performances, including seniors
Diana Effiom (Dallas) and
Kennedy Lewis (Atlanta).
In the field, Effiom won the weight throw after tossing nearly 55 feet (16.66 meters).
On the track, Lewis finished first in the 200-meter dash with a 24.78 mark.
In the short hurdles, junior
Minyarn Smalls (Cary, N.C.) and freshman
Jasmyn Hunter (Flossmoor, Ill.) advanced to the final round after posting 9.32 and 9.41 times, respectively. In the final, Smalls and Hunter placed fourth (9.23) and fifth (9.31), respectively.
On the men's side, third-year Bison
Cameron Kee (Lawnside, N.J.) earned bronze in the 400-meter dash with a 50.51 time.
Newcomer
Eric Brown, Jr. reached the men's 60-meter hurdles final after registering an 8.73 mark during prelims. In the final, he took third overall with an 8.54 time.
Brown also excelled in the field events, placing third in the long jump (6.96 meters) and triple jump (14.30 meters).
On Feb. 11-12, Howard travels to Chicago for the Windy City Invite, hosted by the University of Chicago.
