Women's Basketball Edges Out Eagles on Senior Day

Coach Ty Grace gets 100th career win as Bison head coach

WASHINGTON (February 26, 2022) – Howard University women's basketball team edged out a win over the North Carolina Central (NCCU) Eagles, 65-63, on Senior Day inside Burr Gymnasium.

With the victory, HU improved to 16-8 (10-2 MEAC) overall while NCCU dropped to 4-18 (2-10 MEAC) on the season.

Offensively, Howard shot a respectable 43-percent (24-of-56) from the floor with five Bison reaching double figures. Sophomore guard Destiny Howell (Queens, N.Y.) led the way with 14 points and seven boards while junior forward Brooklynn Fort-Davis (Chicago) notched a double-double (14 points and 10 rebounds) in the win.

Howard started the first quarter strong, but the Eagles took a slim 14-13 advantage after one.

NCCU held the upper hand throughout the second period, but the Bison only trailed by three at intermission, 23-26.

HU got into a rhythm after halftime, shooting 64-percent (9-of-14) while taking a six-point lead into the fourth, 52-46.

The Eagles managed to creep back into the game, thanks to the long ball. NCCU shot 50-percent (3-of-6) from downtown in the period, but the Bison withstood North Carolina Central's late charge to win their 10th conference game of the year.

Before the game, graduate Vanessa Udoji (Randolph, Mass.) and seniors Krislyn Marsh (Houston) and Gia Thorpe (Pittsburgh) were acknowledged during the senior day festivities for their hard work and dedication to the women's basketball program. Udoji and Marsh both received the starting nod from head coach Ty Grace, who earned her 100th career victory as Bison head coach. Thorpe missed the contest due to injury.

Marsh finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and four blocks while the Massachusetts native saw recorded three boards and two points in 12 minutes.

Second-year Bison Kaiya Creek (Seat Pleasant, Md.) and newcomer Nyla Cooper (Fayetteville, N.C.) netted 10 points off the bench.

Nia Ford led all scorers, producing 19 points off the bench for North Carolina Central.
