WASHINGTON (February 28, 2022) – Howard University women's basketball team topped the South Carolina State (SCSU) Lady Bulldogs, 64-48, inside Burr Gymnasium.
With the victory, HU moved to 17-8 (11-2 MEAC) overall while extending its win streak to seven.
Despite shooting only 34-percent (22-of-65) from the floor, the Bison found a way to win, starting on the defensive end.
"We came out a little flat tonight," said Howard Women's Basketball head coach
Ty Grace. "We didn't come out with any energy. Although we defended well, we didn't have that spark offensively. But we picked it up in the second half and found a way to win."
Defensively, Howard held the Lady Bulldogs under 27-percent (15-of-56) shooting.
Forwards
Brooklynn Fort-Davis (Chicago) and
Krislyn Marsh (Houston) led the Bison attack, each finishing with a double-double.
"The game plan was to go inside," Grace stated. "We knew Brooklynn and Krislyn were going to have the advantage and they did that."
Fort-Davis produced 13 points (team-high) and 10 boards while the Houston native added 12 points and 11 rebounds (game-high) in the victory.
SCSU held a seven-point advantage late in the opening quarter after a long ball from Nicole Gwynn, 13-6, but Howard closed out the period on a 5-0 spurt and cut the deficit to a one-possession game after one, 13-11.
South Carolina State held the lead throughout the second quarter until a fast break layup from second-year Bison
Aniya Wilson (Accokeek, Md.) gave HU a two-point advantage at the break, 23-21.
Howard found its rhythm after intermission, shooting 50-percent (6-of-12) from the field while holding a seven-point lead after three, 44-37.
In the fourth, HU clamped down on the defensive end and held the Lady Bulldogs to only 20-percent (2-of-10) while pulling away to victory.
For SCSU (4-23, 4-9 MEAC), Gwynn led all scorers with 17 points in the loss.
HU closes out the regular season at rival Norfolk State. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
