VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (February 22, 2022) – Howard University women's track and field team holds second place on Day Two of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Championships, held inside the Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia Beach, Va.
After two days, the Bison have accumulated 60 points, trailing Norfolk State by a slim margin (62).
In the 60-meter dash, five Bison advanced to the next round, led by senior
Jessika Gbai (Philadelphia). The Philadelphia native set a new school mark with an automatic qualifying time of 7.53, breaking the previous record set by her and teammate
Ameenah Saalih (Willingboro, N.J.), 7.54.
Joining Gbai in the next round includes Saalih and freshmen
Sherri-Anne Norton (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.),
Tiffani-Rae Pittman (Bowie, Md.) and
Lamaria Washington (Miami).
Seniors
Jessica Wright (Durham, N.C.) and
Ozioma Scott (Georgetown, Guyana) advanced to the 400-meter final, clocking in at 54.32 and 57.37, respectively.
In the short hurdles, sophomore
Kaya-Rae Dunbar (Burtonsville, Md.) and
Jasmyn Hunter (Flossmoor, Ill.) made the final, producing 8.55 and 8.97 marks, respectively.
Senior
Kennedy Lewis (Atlanta), juniors
Breanna McDonald (Bethesda, Md.) and
Dasia Wilson (Philadelphia) and sophomore
Alyssa Mark (Orlando, Fla.) scored five points in the distance medley relay (DMR), finishing fourth overall with a 12:40.75 time.
In the field, senior
Diana Effiom (Dallas) took second in the weight throw after tossing over 56 feet (17.24 meters).
Juniors
Erin Hatcher (Burtonsville, Md.) and
Symone Marsh (Hillsborough, N.J.) earned seventh (15.45 meters) and eight (15.11 meters) place, respectively, in the weight throw.
Other notable field performance included third-year Bison
Minyarn Smalls (Cary, N.C.) taking sixth in the high jump (1.47 meters), scoring three points for HU.
