WASHINGTON, D.C. (December 2, 2022) - Howard University women's basketball team improved their record to 3-5 overall after a 64-56 win over the Elon Phoenix on Elementary Day at Burr Gymnasium.
Nine different players put points on the board for the Bison, including three hitting double digits: graduate Aziah Hudson (Baldwin, N.Y./16 points), junior Destiny Howell (Queens, N.Y./13 points) and senior Iyanna Warren (Accokeek, Md./12 points).
Despite a tough shooting night, the third-year guard found ways to help her squad pick up the win on defense with three steals and a pair of blocks.
"I was very confident going into today's game," said Howell, coming off a career-high 34-point performance in Wednesday's victory at American. "My shot wasn't falling, but I managed to help my team in other ways."
In the first half, Howard struggled on the offensive end, shooting only 23-percent (7-of-31) from the floor, but trailed only one at intermission, 23-22.
The Bison came out strong after halftime, shooting 67-percent (12-of-18) in the third stanza, while outscoring Elon (4-3) in the quarter, 28-17. After three, HU held a 10-point advantage going into the fourth period, 50-40.
Howard maintained their lead throughout the fourth quarter, earning their second straight win.
On the defensive end, senior Brooklynn Fort-Davis (Chicago) led the Bison with a seven rebounds and graduate Krislyn Marsh (Houston) trailed with four boards.
For Elon, Raven Preston and Lenaejha Evans each finished with 16 points apiece in the loss.
The Bison will look to continue their win streak Saturday (December 10) versus the Towson Tigers. Tipoff at 2 p.m. inside Burr Gymnasium.
