Washington, DC (December 10,2022) - Senior
Iyanna Warren scored a game-high 18 points and
Aziah Hudson added 11, but it was not enough as Howard fell 68-58 to Towson University in a women's non-conference game at Burr Gymnasium. The loss snapped a two-game win streak for the Bison (3-6).
The game was a nip-and-tuck affair through most of the matchup and featured 17 lead changes and 11 ties. Although the Tigers (5-4) once held its biggest lead at 11 early in the second quarter, Howard was able to get back into it on the scoring of Warren and Hudson.
The key point in the game came when Howard got to within two points (58-56) at the 4:50 mark in the fourth quarter. Towson then took advantage of some costly Bison turnovers and reeled off a 10-2 run the rest of the way to pull out the win.
During their recent victory run, the Bison have been getting production from their all-conference guard
Destiny Howell who had averaged 24 points per game in those two contests. The 5-10 junior had an off day finishing with only eight points, six below her season average.
That was not the major key. Howard hurt itself on turnovers allowing Towson to get 30 of their points off Bison miscues. Another notable area was in rebounding where the Tigers did damage on the offensive glass with 21 second-chance opportunities.
When asking Coach
Ty Grace about the impact second chance opportunities had on the game, she shared, "We didn't do a great job finishing plays on the defensive end, their second chance opportunities definitely gave them an edge. We have to try to keep our turnovers under 13. Twenty was just too significant."
The Tigers were led by Skye Williams and Quinzia Fulmon, who each tallied 14 points and India Johnston, who contributed 13. The Bison earned six points from their bench.
Towson now leads the series, 2-0.
NEXT UP: Howard has little time to ponder the loss as it travels to Chicago, Ill. to take on highly regarded DePaul University on Monday at 12 Noon. "It is a challenge to have one day to prep for such a talented team like DePaul, however that's what basketball is, competition," Grace said. "We're here to compete no matter the opponent, or circumstance. We want to continue and get better each game."
The DePaul matchup will be a homecoming for Howard senior forward
Brooklynn Fort-Davis, who prepped at Whitney Young High School.
