Men’s Basketball Meets Belmont in Paradise Jam Finale

Bison look to close out weekend with back-to-back wins

ST. THOMAS, VIRGIN ISLANDS (November 20, 2022) - The Howard University men's basketball team will be looking to win two-in-a-row for the first time this season when it takes on Belmont University in the Third Round of the Paradise Jam at the Virgin Islands Monday (Nov. 21). The game is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. and will be aired on ESPN3.

FOLLOW THE ACTION

Bison Nation can follow all the action on ESPN3 and/or live stats. The winner will finish fourth in the tournament while the loser falls to sixth overall.

MATCHUP PREVIEW

Interestingly enough, the two teams met in the 2020 Paradise Jam (November 26, 2020) in D.C. with Belmont prevailing, 95-78.

Both clubs are coming off second round wins Saturday (Nov. 19). Belmont won 78-71 over George Mason and Howard grabbed a hard-fought 63-59 victory over Buffalo.

BELMONT

In Belmont, the Bison (3-4) face one of the top mid-major programs in the country. The Bruins are no stranger to success, posting several 20-plus win seasons and are a perennial participant in the NCAA Tournament.

Belmont (2-3) is yet another one of those balanced scoring teams that the Bison have seemed to face every game this season. The Bruins are led by the quartet of Ben Sheppard (20.0 ppg), Cade Tyson (15.8 ppg), Ja'Kobi Gillespie (12.2 ppg) and Drew Fieberg (11.2 ppg).

HOWARD

Howard counters with its own core of sophomores Elijah Hawkins (Washington, 14.2 ppg, 4.5 ppg) and Bryce Harris (Brentwood, N.Y., 10.0 ppg, 5.1 rpg) and redshirt junior Steve Settle, III (Glenarden, Md., 12.6 ppg, 4.0 rpg).

The Bison are hoping that the bench can provide another spark, similar to their victory over Buffalo. In that contest, freshman Shy Odom (Chatsworth, Calif.) came off the bench to tally 14 points and six rebounds while sophomore Marcus Dockery (Washington) chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds in a reserve role.

Howard has been plagued with early season injuries, most notably Kobe Dickson (Holcomb, Kan.) and Khalil Robinson (Columbia, S.C.).

UPCOMING SCHEDULE

Howard will embark on a four-game road trip, beginning Saturday (Nov. 26) at Austin Peay State University. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
