Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. – The win streak continues for Howard University volleyball. The Bison blanked Morgan State University 3-0 Friday night for their ninth victory in a row. The win moves Howard to a 15-7 overall record and 8-1 in conference. Morgan State drops to 2-8 in conference while holding a 3-21 overall season record.
The score was evenly spaced throughout the first set, that is until the Bison went on an unanswered six-point run giving them an 11-8 lead over the Bears. Howard would go on another unanswered run shortly after widening the gap before Morgan State posted three consecutive points for a 23-18 deficit. The MSU run came up short as the Bison's Cimone Woodard (Missouri City, Texas) sent back-to-back kills for the first win of the night.
The Bison opened the scoring for the second set in a row when freshman standout Rya McKinnon (Bessemer, Ala.) posted two points for HU. Three three-point runs more than doubled the score giving Howard a 13-6 lead over MSU. The Bears retaliated, closing the gap to a three-point deficit with a lengthy run of their own. A big kill by MSU's Makila Billingsley gave the Bears a boost of morale and a 21-19 deficit. The sudden rally cry stumbled the Bison off their game, causing an error from HU on the next play. The Bison bounced back at the end of the set with a kill by Jennifer Bolden (Las Angeles, Calif.) before closing the set on an error from MSU.
The Bears opened the final set with a kill. Howard answered back with three uncontested points. Closing in on the Bison's lead, MSU gained a two-point advantage over Howard when they posted five unanswered points. The Bison tied the score 14-14 before earning a two-point lead. The advantage didn't last long as an attack error evened the score 17-17. Four consecutive points was the push HU needed as the Bears did not rebound from the 21-17 deficit. Howard's Bria Woodard (Missouri City, Texas) ended the game with a kill and a 3-0 sweep for the Bison.
The Bison are back in action Sunday, October 30th at 1 P.M. as they face Coppin State in their final Beltway matchup of the weekend.
